Chapter 14

Peter's attorney requested a meeting with the independent accountant, Nina, and Mara. He made clear that Peter was not offering immunity in exchange for information. He wanted his client to correct false records, preserve evidence, and cooperate through lawful channels while receiving legal advice about the consequences.

Elena nearly refused to attend. Seeing Peter again meant looking at the person who had calculated a debt and placed it on her shoulders. Nina reminded her that she could be informed of the findings without sitting across from him. Elena chose to come, but she set a condition: no one would ask her to forgive Peter in exchange for his cooperation.

The meeting took place in a plain room at the accounting firm's office. Peter looked at the table instead of at her. His lawyer placed two folders in front of the accountant. They contained copies of bank transfer requests, contract amendments, and internal emails that Peter had retained after his access was restricted.

Peter explained that Harrow Facilities had been set up to centralize collections and maintenance. At first, he had reconciled deposits normally. Later, Cassandra instructed him to classify money as unreconciled until residents accepted new payment terms. The open balances created a narrative of poor collections and declining building performance.

"Why make the building look worse?" Elena asked.

Peter glanced at his lawyer, then answered. "Because the redevelopment proposal needed financial urgency. A failing building looked easier to sell."

He acknowledged drafting the accusation against Elena after she began demanding bank statements. Cassandra had told him her signature on the employment notice was sufficient authority; he nevertheless copied Adrian's signature block from an earlier letter. He said he had been afraid of losing his job. Elena heard the words without softening.

"You were afraid," she replied. "You had a salary. I had a daughter who thought her jar of coins could stop the police."

Peter's eyes filled, but Elena had no need to comfort him. The cost he had imposed did not disappear because he could now describe his fear.

The accountant examined the bank instructions. The $312,000 appeared to have moved from a trust-controlled account into an escrow arrangement benefiting North Quay's proposed acquisition. The documents showed conditions tied to a future property transaction, not an ordinary roof or elevator repair.

One contract amendment also changed the description of certain Harrow fees from "maintenance support" to "transition services." The underlying invoices still referred to identical dates and vague work descriptions. The accountant asked who had authorized the new terms. Peter answered that Cassandra had approved the change after he raised concerns about how the costs would appear during an audit. His attorney added that those assertions should be tested against original communications. Elena appreciated the qualification. It was the first time she had watched someone with authority resist making a convenient answer larger than the proof.

Mara requested independent verification from the bank and escrow agent. Peter's copies established what instructions existed; they did not, alone, prove every transfer settled. The group recorded that distinction carefully.

Outside, Adrian sat in the hallway with a paper cup of coffee going cold. He was not included in every part of Elena's meeting. Nina had insisted that he not treat access to her evidence as a privilege of wealth or family status. He had agreed, though waiting without controlling the conversation felt alien.

When Elena emerged, she told him only what she chose. "Peter admitted he wrote the numbers against me. He says Cassandra ordered it. His documents point to money reserved for Julian's deal."

Adrian nodded. "What do you need from me?"

"Don't make a speech. Don't apologize for your brother. Help the records get where they belong."

He promised to support the accountant's access and the residents' effort to challenge the property transaction. Later, he formally requested that Cassandra be suspended from handling Bellwether payments pending review. This time, two trustees who had abstained before agreed that financial authority should be temporarily shared with an outside fiduciary.

The proposal had not yet passed. But Cassandra's power was no longer automatic, and she knew it. Her attorney sent a new statement accusing the investigation of selective leaks. It also claimed Adrian had approved every material action by delegation.

Mara placed the signed delegation beside Cassandra's claim. The document authorized routine administration. It did not authorize forged consents, falsified balances, or using charitable funds as unapproved acquisition collateral.

In her apartment, Elena crossed Peter's false theft number off the whiteboard. She replaced it with a new question: WHERE DID THE MONEY ACTUALLY GO?
