Chapter 11 - Eleven Missing Minutes

Angela Pierce returned with a lawyer.

She refused to meet at school.

The interview took place at the board counsel’s office.

Lily was not allowed inside.

Neither was Rebecca.

They waited across the street in a diner while Melissa attended.

Two hours passed.

Then three.

When Melissa finally entered the diner, she looked exhausted.

“She corroborates part of it.”

Rebecca stood.

“Which part?”

“Danner instructed her to use administrative access to alter receiving records.”

Lily whispered, “And my mom’s login?”

“Angela says Danner told her Rebecca had already approved adjustments and that she was only correcting clerical issues.”

Rebecca’s face twisted.

“So Angela used my credentials?”

“She used an administrative override that made edits appear under your profile.”

“Can they prove that?”

“They’re checking logs.”

Lily asked, “Why did she run?”

“She panicked after the board meeting.”

“What about the anonymous calendar?”

Melissa nodded.

“She sent it.”

Rebecca sat down.

“Why not come forward openly?”

“Because Danner told her that if the contract scandal surfaced, the district would blame clerical staff.”

Lily thought about the cafeteria.

Pick it up.

People with power always seemed to decide who would be left cleaning the floor.

Melissa continued.

“There’s more.”

Angela had preserved a full export of the receiving-office camera archive.

The version Rebecca possessed was authentic.

But incomplete.

Not because Rebecca had edited it.

Because the district backup itself had been truncated.

Eleven minutes were missing.

Danner had ordered Angela to delete them.

“What was in those eleven minutes?” Lily asked.

“She says she doesn’t know.”

“How could she delete it without watching?”

“She followed instructions.”

Rebecca looked furious.

Melissa raised a hand.

“She preserved a disk image before making the deletion.”

Lily stared.

“So it can be recovered?”

“Possibly.”

The forensic team worked overnight.

By Friday afternoon, they restored seven minutes and thirty-two seconds.

The board called another emergency session.

This time the public gallery overflowed into a second room.

Danner did not attend.

His attorney claimed illness.

Superintendent Blake appeared by video.

William Carter sat in the front row.

Hailey sat beside her mother, Elise.

Lily had never been close enough to notice how tired Elise looked.

Chair Shaw explained that investigators had recovered deleted footage.

Then the video played.

The first section matched what everyone had already seen.

William discussing weights “on paper.”

Blake warning about Rebecca.

Danner agreeing to restrict records.

Then the recovered portion began.

William’s voice:

“The private events are not the problem. The reimbursement numbers are.”

Blake replied, “The state only sees meal counts.”

“And they’ll keep seeing them.”

Danner said, “We’re claiming meals that weren’t served.”

Silence filled the board room.

William’s attorney stood.

“This recording requires complete forensic review before any conclusions—”

Chair Shaw raised a hand.

The video continued.

Blake sounded nervous.

“If federal reimbursement gets audited—”

William interrupted.

“It won’t if records stay consistent.”

Then Danner asked:

“What about Morgan?”

William answered:

“Rebecca is manageable.”

A pause.

“Her husband was manageable too.”

Lily stopped breathing.

Rebecca gripped her hand.

Danner’s voice:

“Daniel kept delivery notes.”

“I offered him a supervisor position. He had medical problems. Eventually he had bigger concerns.”

Lily felt relief and anger at once.

No sinister claim about her father’s death.

No secret violence.

Just something uglier in its ordinariness.

William had seen a sick man struggling to support his family and tried to buy his silence.

The video continued.

Danner:

“And if Rebecca refuses?”

William:

“Then we use what she cares about.”

Blake:

“The daughter?”

William:

“The scholarship.”

The footage ended.

Hailey stared at her father.

William did not look at her.

Chair Shaw called a recess.

The room exploded into noise.

Rebecca turned to Lily.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For not knowing about your father.”

“You couldn’t.”

“I should have—”

“No.”

Lily squeezed her hand.

“This part isn’t yours.”

Across the room, Hailey stood.

She walked toward William.

Elise caught her arm.

“Not here.”

Hailey pulled free.

“You used me too.”

William finally looked at her.

“This is more complicated than you understand.”

“That’s what you keep saying.”

“Hailey.”

“Did you tell Danner I was useful when I was angry?”

His face changed.

Elise looked at him sharply.

Hailey laughed once.

It sounded almost like a sob.

“You did.”

William leaned toward her.

“Go home with your mother.”

“No.”

“Now.”

Hailey stepped backward.

For once, she did not obey.

Board security officers approached William.

Not to arrest him.

To escort him from the meeting after Chair Shaw formally suspended Carter Dining’s contract pending emergency replacement arrangements.

As William turned toward the exit, Lily saw his composure disappear for the first time.

Then Dana Morales intercepted Melissa.

She whispered something.

Melissa’s eyes widened.

“What?” Rebecca asked.

Melissa looked at them.

“The forensic team found another deleted file linked to the same meeting.”

“What file?”

“An audio attachment.”

Lily felt her stomach tighten.

Melissa lowered her voice.

May you like

“It’s labeled with your mother’s name.”
