Chapter 1 - The Necklace on the StoneVanessa Whitmore grabbed the silver necklace around seven-year-old Lily Harper's throat and ripped it away so violently that the little girl stumbled backward.

The chain snapped.

Lily screamed.

Before she could catch her balance, Vanessa shoved her with both hands.

The child hit the stone terrace outside Whitmore Hall, her white princess dress spreading around her like a broken flower.

A delicate silver pendant bounced twice against the pavement.

Then everything went quiet.

For one terrible second, the guests at the expensive garden party stood frozen beneath the Maryland afternoon sun.

Vanessa didn't look frightened by what she'd done.

She looked furious.

"You little thief!" she shouted, pointing a perfectly manicured finger at Lily. "Did you honestly think you could steal from this family and get away with it?"

Lily stared up at her.

Her golden-blonde ponytail had come loose, and a thin red mark was already forming across the front of her neck.

"I didn't steal it," she whispered.

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Don't lie to me."

Lily's lower lip trembled.

"Mommy gave it to me."

The words struck harder than the fall.

Because Lily's mother, Sarah Harper, had been dead for two years.

And the necklace was the last birthday present Sarah had ever given her daughter.

"Your mother isn't here to protect you anymore," Vanessa said coldly.

Lily stopped breathing for a moment.

Then she began to cry.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just the helpless, wounded crying of a child who had suddenly discovered how cruel an adult could be.

Three yards away, Daniel Harper turned toward the sound.

He had been speaking with two guests near the stone garden wall when he'd heard Lily scream.

At first, his mind couldn't understand what he was seeing.

His daughter was on the ground.

Vanessa stood over her.

And something silver lay broken between them.

"LILY!"

Daniel moved before anyone could stop him.

He crossed the terrace in four furious strides and seized Vanessa's upper arm, pulling her away from his daughter.

"What the hell are you doing?"

Vanessa stumbled and spun toward him.

"Daniel! Take your hands off me!"

He released her immediately but stepped between her and Lily.

His dark navy suit strained across his shoulders as he fought to control his breathing.

"Did you just put your hands on my child?"

Vanessa adjusted the neckline of her pink satin gown.

"Your daughter stole Mother's necklace."

Daniel stared at her.

"What?"

"She's been sneaking around the house all afternoon. I caught her wearing something that belongs in our family safe."

Behind him, Lily shook her head.

"Daddy, no."

Daniel glanced down.

Blood wasn't visible, but her neck was reddening, and she was holding her wrist against her chest.

He crouched beside her.

"Sweetheart, look at me. Are you hurt?"

Lily nodded.

"She pushed me."

His jaw tightened.

"Can you move your fingers?"

She slowly opened her hand.

"Good girl. Don't get up yet."

Vanessa gave an impatient laugh.

"Oh, please. She's fine. She's putting on a performance."

Daniel rose.

Something in his expression made Vanessa take a step backward.

"You assaulted a seven-year-old girl."

"She's a liar."

"Say one more word about my daughter."

His voice was low now.

Dangerously low.

"Daniel," someone called.

He looked toward the garden doors.

Eleanor Whitmore, the seventy-year-old mistress of the estate, stood beneath the stone archway.

Her silver-gray hair was perfectly arranged, and three strands of pearls rested against her navy lace dress.

She was staring at Lily.

Then at the broken necklace.

Her mouth fell open.

One hand rose slowly to cover it.

Daniel had known Eleanor for almost twelve years.

She had never been a warm woman, but she had always been composed.

Now she looked as though someone had shown her a ghost.

"Eleanor," Daniel said, "your daughter just attacked Lily."

The elderly woman didn't answer.

Her eyes remained fixed on the pendant.

Vanessa followed her gaze.

For the first time, her confident expression faltered.

"Mother," she said sharply. "Don't."

Daniel heard that.

He also saw Eleanor's fingers trembling.

"What is going on?"

Eleanor swallowed.

"That necklace..."

She stopped.

Lily reached toward the fallen pendant.

Daniel knelt to help her, but she shook her head.

"I can get it, Daddy."

He hesitated.

Then he allowed her to pick it up.

Her small fingers closed around the broken silver chain.

She began crying harder.

"Mommy said it was mine forever."

Daniel felt something crack inside his chest.

"I know, sweetheart."

Lily looked toward her grandmother.

"Grandma, why did Aunt Vanessa say I stole it?"

Eleanor's face turned pale.

Vanessa moved toward her mother.

"Don't answer that."

Daniel stood slowly.

"Why not?"

No one spoke.

A breeze moved through the rose bushes.

Then Eleanor whispered something so quietly that Daniel almost missed it.

"Sarah was right."

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

"Mother!"

But Eleanor was no longer looking at her daughter.

She was looking at Daniel.

And the fear in her eyes was unmistakable.

"Daniel," she said, "you need to take Lily away from this house."

He glanced at Vanessa.

Then back at Eleanor.

"Why?"

May you like

The old woman pressed a hand against her pearl necklace.

"Because this was never supposed to happen in front of witnesses."
