Chapter 16

The backup video was silent and imperfect. It came from a fixed camera above the service elevator, pointed toward the back of the blue passage. Its image was partly obscured by a decorative column. Detective Ruiz, the venue's lawyer, and the technical examiner reviewed the original file with timestamps intact. No one pretended it could reveal words spoken beyond its microphone, because it had none.

At 8:31, Greg entered carrying a narrow black case. At 8:34, Celeste followed with a red-marked envelope. At 8:39, she came back leading Lily by the hand. The child appeared reluctant, turning twice toward the ballroom. Greg stood beside the second door, then reached toward the security console visible at the edge of the frame.

At 8:41, the camera aimed toward the ballroom had gone dark. The backup camera continued recording the adjacent entrance. Celeste leaned down close to Lily, holding the leather strap in one hand and pointing toward the red-marked envelope in the other. Lily stepped backward until she touched the wall. The video did not show a strike. It did show an adult using an object and her physical position in a way that made a child recoil.

At 8:43, Greg moved the envelope into his black case. At 8:44, he opened the second door and carried the case through. Celeste led Lily back toward the ballroom. The child rubbed her hands against her skirt.

Two minutes later, the outside camera recorded Daniel approaching the crying girl. The files connected the service passage to the confrontation, though the actual collision with the trolley was captured by another system and by guests' phones.

Ruiz ordered a careful preservation and evidence review. Investigators used legal process to obtain access-control records and relevant stored files, including messages associated with the case. They were not going to base criminal accusations on facial expressions alone.

Maya and Daniel were briefed on what the footage established. Maya gripped the arms of her chair when she heard how Lily had backed into the wall. She was grateful the detective did not play the video for her without asking. Some truths were necessary to know without becoming something a mother had to watch repeatedly.

“Will she have to see it?” Maya asked.

“Not as part of her treatment,” Ruiz replied. “We will coordinate any investigative steps with appropriate child specialists.”

Daniel felt anger burn behind his eyes. He wanted to find Greg and Julian and make them admit what they had done. Instead he asked what the investigators needed him to preserve. He gave them his original phone messages and a complete account of the confrontation, including his own contact with the strap. The discipline of answering narrowly and truthfully was harder than the violence he'd performed at the gala.

Greg's attorney contacted prosecutors after learning the backup existed. His client was prepared to provide a fuller statement in exchange for consideration, but no agreement had been promised. Greg admitted he had concealed the red envelope in a transport case and later delivered it to Julian's office. He claimed he had not opened it.

“Did you know Lily was afraid?” Ruiz asked during a formally recorded interview.

“Yes,” Greg answered.

“Why didn't you help her?”

Greg stared at the table for a long time. “I thought if I kept my job, I could say I hadn't seen enough. I saw enough.”

His words did not absolve him. They established how a paid adult had chosen loyalty to a paycheck over the safety of a child who had asked to leave.

Simone compared the pickup and delivery timestamps with the foundation document history. The envelope reached Julian's office shortly before North Quay's counsel circulated the forged signature page. The records now described a continuous movement of altered paperwork from foundation archive to gala corridor to buyer's office.

The detective also reminded Daniel that the recovered footage had to be interpreted with care. A child's movement away from an adult showed visible fear, but it did not reveal the exact words that produced it. Lily's separate statements, properly documented and evaluated, mattered for different reasons. He had begun to understand why investigators moved slowly. They were not dragging their feet to spare Celeste. They were separating observation from conclusion so that an accurate account could survive later scrutiny. He copied that distinction into his notebook in the same deliberate handwriting he once reserved for financial figures.

That evening, Maya took Lily to the park. Lily asked whether Daniel could come next time. Maya said they would ask him, and that Lily could change her mind. Lily went back to the swings, pushing herself higher each time she felt comfortable.

At the office, Evelyn received a notice from the court clerk. The foundation's emergency request for an order restraining the property transaction had been scheduled for a hearing.

The documents would soon have to withstand scrutiny outside the family.
