Chapter 5 - The Board Meeting

The school board meeting drew more than three hundred people.

Westbridge usually struggled to fill thirty seats.

Now parents stood along the walls.

Students crowded the back.

Television cameras waited outside.

Teresa sat beside her attorney in the second row.

Emily sat between Sarah and Rebecca Sloan.

Brooke sat across the aisle with Claire.

Kayla was nowhere visible.

Principal Warren opened with a summary.

Two separate reviews were underway.

One involved student conduct.

Another involved historical discipline records and employee procedures.

Then Claire Holloway requested public comment.

She walked to the microphone.

“I am speaking as a parent,” she began.

Sofia whispered, “Convenient.”

Emily almost smiled.

Claire continued.

“My daughter made mistakes.”

Brooke looked at her.

It was the first public acknowledgment.

“But no student should be subjected to public condemnation before an investigation is complete.”

Claire glanced toward Teresa.

“Nor should school employees secretly record minors in spaces where privacy is expected.”

Murmurs spread.

Teresa remained still.

Claire’s voice became stronger.

“We cannot answer wrongdoing with wrongdoing.”

Sarah whispered, “She practiced that.”

Emily believed it.

When Claire returned to her seat, Teresa’s name was called.

She walked to the microphone.

Her hands shook slightly.

“My name is Teresa Alvarez. I have cleaned this district’s schools for eleven years.”

Silence.

“I recorded what happened near the sinks because a student was on the floor under a trash bin while two other students laughed.”

Teresa looked toward the board.

“If policy says I should have walked away and found an administrator first, then you can discipline me.”

Her voice caught.

“But I will not apologize for refusing to leave her alone.”

Applause erupted.

The board chair called for order.

Teresa continued.

“My phone did not record the stalls. No student was changing clothes. It recorded an assault and threats in an open sink area.”

She returned to her seat.

Emily’s name was called next.

Her legs felt weak.

She walked to the microphone.

For several seconds, she stared at the board.

Then she said, “I reported Brooke before.”

Park shifted in his chair.

“The first time, I was told there wasn’t enough evidence.”

She looked toward Teresa.

“I found out this week there was a witness statement I was never told about.”

Park’s attorney whispered to him.

“The second time, I reported anonymous threats. I was told nobody could prove who sent them.”

Emily swallowed.

“So when Brooke dumped garbage over me, the worst part wasn’t being on the floor.”

Her voice trembled.

“The worst part was that I already knew what I expected adults to say.”

The room became still.

“I thought they would tell me there wasn’t enough.”

Sarah wiped her eyes.

Emily looked at Park.

“But this time there was enough.”

She returned to her seat.

Then Rebecca Sloan stood.

She could not reveal Jenna’s confidential records without formal permission.

But Jenna had authorized a written statement.

The board chair allowed it to be read.

I transferred from Westbridge after repeated harassment. I reported threats involving private video. My family was told the matter was investigated. I do not believe it was handled honestly.

Brooke stared at the floor.

Then came the line that changed the meeting.

After my family retained counsel, the district offered a confidential transfer agreement and reimbursement of tuition costs at another school.

People began talking.

The board chair banged her gavel.

Emily turned to Sloan.

“They paid her to leave?”

Sloan whispered, “Careful.”

The statement continued.

The agreement did not prohibit me from speaking about my own experience, but my family chose privacy because I wanted to move forward.

That distinction mattered.

No secret hush money.

No illegal bribe.

But money had been spent.

A problem had been moved out of the building.

Not solved.

After public comment, the board entered executive session.

Three hours later, they returned.

Dean Park was placed on administrative leave pending an independent review.

Teresa remained on paid leave, but the board ordered an expedited policy determination.

Brooke’s conduct hearing was scheduled.

Claire looked furious.

Brooke looked sick.

Outside, reporters surrounded everyone.

Sarah led Emily toward the parking lot.

Then Kayla appeared from behind a television van.

Her face was pale.

“Emily.”

Sarah stepped between them.

“You stay away from her.”

Kayla raised both hands.

“I’m not here to fight.”

Emily looked at her.

“What do you want?”

Kayla glanced around.

“Brooke lied.”

Emily said nothing.

“About Jenna.”

Sarah’s expression hardened.

Kayla continued.

“She had a video.”

“What video?”

“Nothing sexual.”

Kayla spoke quickly.

“Jenna crying at a party. Brooke threatened to post it if Jenna told anyone about what happened.”

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“What happened?”

Kayla looked toward Claire Holloway across the parking lot.

Then back at Emily.

“Brooke stole test answers.”

May you like

Emily stared.

Kayla whispered, “And Jenna caught her.”
