Chapter 7 - The Woman Behind the Hedge

Elena Ortiz almost didn't answer the detective's call.
She sat in her parked car outside the grocery store, watching the unfamiliar number illuminate her phone.
Her eldest grandson was in the back seat.
He was reading a library book, unaware that his grandmother's hands were trembling.
Elena had worked at the mansion for six years.
She had survived two different household managers, countless formal dinners, and one difficult winter when the grounds nearly flooded.
She had never feared losing her job as much as she did now.
The phone stopped ringing.
A voicemail notification appeared.
Elena listened.
"Mrs. Ortiz, this is Detective Laura Bennett with the county police. We'd appreciate speaking with you about what you witnessed Tuesday afternoon."
Elena stared through the windshield.
Then she remembered Ellie's face.
The child standing beside the rose garden two weeks earlier.
Her small voice asking whether grown-ups were allowed to tell lies.
Elena had answered carefully.
"Everybody can make mistakes, honey."
Ellie had looked down.
"But what if they lie so someone gets punished?"
Elena hadn't known how to respond.
Now she did.
She returned the detective's call.
Two hours later, Elena sat inside a police interview room.
Detective Bennett placed a recorder on the table after explaining the interview process.
"Please tell me what you personally saw or heard," she said.
Elena described the afternoon.
At 3:08 p.m., Owen Price had approached her near the east hedge.
He instructed her to leave the grounds before four.
At 3:42 p.m., she saw Vivian walking toward the pool with Ellie.
At approximately 3:50, she saw Owen enter the equipment room.
"How certain are you about the time?" the detective asked.
Elena removed her phone.
"I sent a message to my daughter before leaving."
The message was timestamped 3:53 p.m.
It read:
They sent me home early. Something strange is happening today.
Detective Bennett examined it.
"Did you hear Mrs. Mercer and Ellie speaking?"
"Only a little."
"What did you hear?"
"Ellie said she wanted to show her father something."
"And Mrs. Mercer?"
Elena hesitated.
"She told Ellie to stop embarrassing the family."
The detective wrote that down.
"Did you witness any physical contact at the pool?"
"No, ma'am."
Elena looked ashamed.
"I left before it happened."
"You couldn't know what would happen next."
Elena swallowed.
"But I knew the child was afraid."
After the interview, Elena received another message.
It was from Owen.
Your position has been terminated due to a breach of confidentiality. Return your keys immediately.
She stared at the screen.
Six years of employment ended in a single sentence.
Her shoulders slumped.
Then another message appeared.
The household expects discretion regarding private family matters.
Elena took screenshots.
She forwarded them to Detective Bennett.
When she arrived home, Daniel was standing outside her apartment building.
Rebecca had helped arrange the visit after Elena agreed to speak with him.
Elena held up her phone.
"They fired me."
Daniel's face tightened.
"I'm sorry."
She shook her head.
"I knew it might happen."
"We'll make sure your attorney sees these messages."
Elena looked surprised.
"My attorney?"
Rebecca stepped forward.
"If you want one, I can refer you to someone who handles employment retaliation and whistleblower matters."
Elena's eyes filled.
"I don't have much money."
"There may be options," Rebecca answered. "But you shouldn't have to decide anything today."
Daniel looked toward the building.
"Ellie asked about you."
Elena pressed her lips together.
"Is she frightened?"
"Yes."
"Does she blame herself?"
Daniel's silence answered the question.
Elena wiped her cheeks.
"Tell her she did nothing wrong."
Daniel nodded.
"I will."
Elena opened her purse.
"There's something else."
She removed a small notebook.
Inside were dates, watering schedules, supply orders, and observations from her work.
"I started writing things down when Mrs. Mercer began changing Ellie's routine."
Daniel took the notebook carefully.
One entry caught his attention.
Three weeks earlier:
Ellie crying near pool. Mrs. M says she must practice being brave. Mr. P checks gate after she leaves.
Another entry, six days later:
Mr. Vale visited. Argument about shoreline papers. Ellie upstairs. Mrs. M angry afterward.
Daniel read the next page.
There was a final note from the day of the attack.
3:50 — Owen in equipment room. Heard two metallic clicks.
Daniel looked at Elena.
"Two clicks?"
She nodded.
"Like a latch. One immediately after the other."
Ellie had described the same sound.
Elena hadn't spoken to her since the incident.
Two witnesses had independently remembered the same unusual detail.
Then Elena pointed to a line at the bottom of the page.
"I almost forgot this."
Daniel read it.
4:02 — White Vale Development vehicle leaving service entrance.
He looked up.
"Owen was supposed to be repairing the cameras."
Elena nodded.
May you like
"But someone from Mr. Vale's company was already driving away."
And the investigation suddenly had another place to look.
