Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Bargain

Elena Ruiz hated the idea.
“She is trying to control the conditions.”
Daniel stood near the rental-house window while Lily napped upstairs.
“She claims to have the original paternity test.”
“That does not mean you need to meet her.”
“She also says Margaret instructed her.”
“People facing consequences often discover instructions from someone else.”
Daniel knew.
Still, Vanessa knew things he needed.
“What do you suggest?”
“A recorded video conference with counsel present.”
Vanessa refused.
Then she proposed meeting at a public café in Frisco.
Elena refused that too.
Eventually they compromised on a conference room at Elena’s Denver office the following morning, with separate entrances and no direct contact with Lily.
Daniel drove down with Caroline while a trusted childcare professional stayed with Lily at the rental house.
Vanessa arrived wearing oversized sunglasses.
She removed them after sitting.
There was no visible injury.
Only sleeplessness.
Elena placed a recorder on the table.
“With everyone’s consent, this conversation will be recorded.”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Fine.”
Daniel did not return the look.
Elena began.
“You stated you possess evidence concerning Margaret Mercer’s conduct.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“I possess evidence concerning half that family.”
“Let’s start with Margaret.”
Vanessa clasped her hands.
“Margaret told me Rachel cheated.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“When?”
“Before Lily was born.”
“You were Rachel’s friend.”
“I wasn’t really.”
“You attended her baby shower.”
“Because your mother asked me.”
Daniel stared at her.
Vanessa continued.
“Margaret wanted someone close enough to know what Rachel was doing.”
Caroline swore under her breath.
Elena raised a hand.
“What did Margaret ask you to do?”
“At first? Nothing illegal.”
“At first.”
“Tell her who Rachel met. Whether she talked about money. Whether she complained about Daniel.”
Daniel felt physically ill.
Vanessa looked at him.
“I told myself Margaret was protective.”
“You told yourself whatever kept you invited to the lodge.”
Vanessa flinched.
Elena interrupted.
“Continue.”
“Margaret became convinced Rachel’s baby wasn’t Daniel’s. She asked me to help get a sample.”
Daniel said, “Did you?”
Vanessa’s eyes dropped.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Rachel left a hairbrush in the guest bathroom.”
Daniel leaned back as though distance might reduce his disgust.
“And the test?”
“Margaret arranged it.”
“What did she tell you?”
“That it showed Daniel wasn’t the father.”
Daniel slid Robert’s copied report across the table.
Vanessa read it.
Her face changed.
“That’s not what she showed me.”
“What did she show you?”
“A page that said the sample was inconsistent.”
Elena asked, “Do you have it?”
“No.”
“Then how did you discover the real result?”
“Three days ago. Margaret asked me to get estate papers from her Denver study. The lab envelope was in the same locked drawer.”
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“And you took it?”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
Vanessa reached into her handbag.
Elena stopped her.
“Place the bag on the table and remove only the envelope.”
Vanessa did.
A white envelope appeared.
It bore the name of a private laboratory in Arizona.
Elena photographed everything before touching it with gloved hands.
Inside was the original result.
99.9997 percent.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You knew three days ago.”
“Yes.”
“And still swung a frying pan beside Lily yesterday.”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“I didn’t intend to hit her.”
“That is not a defense.”
“I know.”
“No. You know now because I saw you.”
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Margaret kept telling me Lily was ruining our marriage.”
“You agreed.”
“She screamed every time you left.”
“Because she was afraid of you.”
“I didn’t understand that at first.”
“And later?”
Vanessa did not answer.
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“And later?”
“I was angry.”
“At a two-year-old.”
“At you.”
The honesty was ugly enough to sound true.
“You were always working. And when you were home, Lily got all of you. Every time she cried, Rachel was in the room again.”
Daniel stared at her.
“So you punished my daughter because you were jealous of a dead woman.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Caroline looked away.
Elena asked, “What did Margaret ‘make’ you do?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“The behavior logs.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“What logs?”
“She wanted records of Lily being difficult.”
“Why?”
“For guardianship.”
Daniel felt anger surge again.
Vanessa hurried on.
“Margaret said if you ever had another breakdown like after Rachel died, someone needed authority.”
“I did not have a breakdown.”
“You barely slept for months.”
“I was grieving.”
“I know that now.”
“You knew it then.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She said if we documented tantrums, sleep problems, aggression, it would show the household needed structure.”
“Did you falsify records?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
Daniel went silent.
“How?”
“If Lily threw one spoon, I wrote that she threw objects repeatedly. If she cried for ten minutes, I wrote forty-five.”
“Why?”
“Margaret said details mattered.”
Elena asked, “Who else knew?”
Vanessa looked at Caroline.
Then away.
“Robert knew there were logs. Elaine knew. Peter sometimes signed as a witness.”
Daniel’s hands clenched.
“Caroline?”
“She refused to sign.”
It was the first thing Daniel had heard that made him look at his sister differently.
Caroline said nothing.
Vanessa reached into her bag again.
Elena stopped her.
“What else?”
“A flash drive.”
“Place it on the table.”
Vanessa did.
“Copies of the logs. Messages. Documents Margaret sent me.”
Daniel stared at it.
“Why give this to me?”
Vanessa’s answer took a long time.
“Because she’s going to blame everything on me.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“You want protection.”
“Yes.”
“Not redemption.”
Vanessa looked straight at him.
“I don’t think I deserve that.”
For the first time, Daniel believed her.
It did not make him forgive her.
Elena collected the drive.
“This will be reviewed.”
Vanessa stood.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“There’s one more thing.”
He waited.
“The guardianship document with your signature?”
“What about it?”
“I watched Margaret assemble it.”
Daniel’s skin went cold.
“She took a signature page from a corporate authorization you signed in March.”
Caroline whispered, “Jesus.”
Vanessa continued.
“She had someone scan it.”
“Who?”
“Peter.”
Daniel’s cousin.
The same man who had stared at his napkin while Lily cried.
Daniel stood.
Vanessa’s voice followed him.
“And Daniel?”
He turned.
“Margaret didn’t start this because she hated Rachel.”
Daniel said nothing.
“She started it because Rachel found something in the family trust.”
A new silence filled the room.
“What?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never saw it.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Because the night before Rachel went into the hospital, I heard her tell Margaret, ‘If Daniel sees what you did with his father’s trust, you’ll lose everything.’”
Daniel stared at her.
His grief shifted.
Not into suspicion about Rachel’s death.
Into something more grounded and equally dangerous.
Fraud.
“What did my mother do?”
Vanessa looked at the sealed flash drive.
May you like
“I think that answer is in there.”
