Chapter 17 - The Anonymous Email

Just when Sarah thought the story was finally shrinking, an anonymous email arrived.

It went to Principal Hart.

Subject:

YOU MISSED ONE.

Attached was a screenshot from a private group chat dated the previous spring.

Madison was in it.

So was Chloe.

But another student appeared repeatedly.

Olivia Grant.

One message showed Olivia suggesting Sarah’s locker as a target months before Madison’s Bright Futures jealousy began.

Principal Hart reopened part of the investigation.

Sarah felt exhausted.

“Again?”

Elena nodded.

“You can refuse unnecessary involvement.”

“But what if Olivia did something?”

“Then the school investigates Olivia.”

“I need to know.”

“Why?”

Sarah opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Because uncertainty had become addictive.

After months of investigation, evidence, screenshots, interviews, Sarah had started feeling safer only when she knew everything.

But nobody ever knew everything.

Principal Hart met with her.

“You are not required to review these messages.”

“What if they’re about me?”

“Some are.”

Sarah’s stomach tightened.

Hart continued.

“But knowing every cruel thing someone wrote about you is not the same as being informed.”

Sarah looked at her.

“What do I need to know?”

“That Olivia participated in early online mockery. We have no evidence she participated in the restroom assault, design theft, or locker notes.”

“Is she being disciplined?”

“Her conduct is being reviewed.”

“Who sent the email?”

“We don’t know.”

Sarah hated that.

Hart said, “You may never know.”

That felt like a challenge.

Sarah spent an hour imagining possibilities.

Brooke.

Chloe.

Madison.

Some student who hated Olivia.

Then she stopped.

Not because she solved it.

Because she recognized what she was doing.

Trying to control uncertainty.

She closed her laptop.

At fellowship that weekend, Simone gave Sarah a complicated sleeve pattern.

Sarah stared.

“This doesn’t line up.”

“It will.”

“It literally won’t.”

“Trust the grain.”

“That sounds philosophical.”

“It’s fabric.”

Sarah laughed.

She followed the instructions.

The sleeve worked.

Not because she understood every step before moving.

Because sometimes you acted with enough information.

Not complete information.

Enough.

Olivia eventually admitted posting several cruel comments.

She received disciplinary consequences.

She apologized to Priya and two other students.

Sarah chose not to meet with her.

There was no need.

The anonymous sender remained unknown.

Sarah let it remain unknown.

That became its own victory.

Meanwhile, Bright Futures selected Sarah for a summer internship extension at the costume studio.

Simone delivered the news casually.

“You’re invited back.”

Sarah dropped a box of pins.

“What?”

“For eight weeks.”

“Paid?”

“Small stipend.”

“How small?”

“Artistically small.”

Sarah laughed.

“Does my mom know?”

“She had to sign.”

“Traitor.”

Elena had kept the surprise for three days.

That evening they celebrated at the bakery next door.

Mrs. Reyes joined them.

So did Ava.

Principal Hart sent flowers.

Sarah stared at the arrangement.

“This is too much.”

Elena cut cake.

“You have spent six months saying you want normal.”

“I do.”

“This is normal celebration.”

“Normal people don’t get flowers from principals.”

“Normal principals don’t owe your family six months of stress.”

Sarah laughed.

Then Mrs. Reyes handed her a small wrapped box.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

“Open.”

Inside was a pair of silver fabric shears.

Sarah stared.

“They’re expensive.”

“My daughter and I split them.”

Sarah looked up.

“Why?”

Mrs. Reyes smiled.

“Because you keep borrowing your mother’s.”

Elena pointed.

“Exactly.”

Sarah ran her fingers over the handle.

No dramatic engraving.

No inspirational quote.

Just excellent scissors.

Useful.

Sharp.

Built to cut cleanly.

Sarah hugged Mrs. Reyes.

“Thank you.”

Mrs. Reyes whispered, “Make something good.”

Sarah pulled back.

“Or something bad that I can fix.”

Mrs. Reyes laughed.

May you like

“Even better.”
