Chapter 5 - The Offer

Grant Mercer did not threaten Noah.

That would have been easier.

Instead, he apologized.

“I saw what happened yesterday,” he said. “What Chloe did was unacceptable.”

They stood outside the hardware store while Rachel remained between Grant and her son.

Grant’s voice was calm.

Measured.

Practiced.

“I’m embarrassed by my daughter’s behavior.”

Noah said nothing.

Grant looked at Rachel.

“You must be furious.”

“I am.”

“You should be.”

That answer seemed designed to disarm her.

It almost worked.

Then Grant looked at Eli.

“Mr. Barnes.”

Eli’s jaw tightened.

“Mr. Mercer.”

Grant sighed.

“I’m sorry to see old misunderstandings being revived.”

“There was no misunderstanding.”

Rachel stepped forward.

“You came here to speak with my son. Speak.”

Grant nodded.

“Fair.”

He turned toward Noah.

“I understand you possess a recording involving Chloe, Coach Reynolds and possibly me.”

“Possibly?”

“A noisy hallway can make identification difficult.”

Noah thought of the clarity of Grant’s voice.

“It wasn’t difficult.”

Grant smiled faintly.

“Even so, recordings can create impressions without context.”

“You said payment records.”

“I discuss financial records constantly.”

“For what?”

“School board matters. My businesses. Charities.”

Noah watched him.

Grant never answered the question directly.

Then came the offer.

“I’d like to help resolve this before it becomes destructive.”

Rachel’s eyes narrowed.

“To whom?”

“To everyone.”

Grant reached into his jacket.

Rachel stiffened, but he removed only a business card.

“My attorney can coordinate with the district. We can ask that Noah’s academic misconduct case be reviewed immediately.”

Noah stared.

“You can ask?”

“As board president, I can request procedural review.”

“And Chloe?”

“She will face consequences for the cafeteria incident.”

“What consequences?”

“That is for the school.”

Noah almost admired the way Grant made power sound like neutrality.

Grant continued.

“I’m also aware Noah applied for the Virginia Student Media Fellowship.”

Rachel looked sharply at him.

“How do you know that?”

“I serve on several education committees.”

Noah felt sick.

Grant smiled again.

“I know people connected with the fellowship. Good people. I would be happy to personally clarify that the academic allegation against Noah remains disputed.”

There it was.

Not money.

Something better.

His future.

Noah heard Eli shift behind him.

Grant lowered his voice.

“This situation does not need to define you.”

“What do you want?” Noah asked.

Grant’s smile disappeared.

“Accuracy.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning I’d like you not to distribute edited or incomplete recordings while adults determine what actually happened.”

“They aren’t edited.”

“Then you should have nothing to fear from an independent review.”

Rachel asked, “Independent by whom?”

“My attorney can recommend—”

“No.”

Rachel said it so quickly Grant stopped.

She stepped closer.

“You are offering to influence my son’s fellowship application while asking him to withhold evidence involving you.”

“I am offering assistance.”

“You are offering leverage.”

Grant’s jaw flexed.

“Mrs. Walker, I understand emotions are high.”

“No. You understand exactly what you’re doing.”

Noah had rarely seen his mother angry outside a hospital story.

Now she looked almost cold.

“You don’t contact my son again without me present.”

Grant looked at Noah.

“I hope you think carefully.”

Rachel blocked his line of sight.

“We’re done.”

They walked away.

Behind them, Grant called, “Noah.”

Noah stopped despite himself.

Grant’s voice lost some of its softness.

“Once something goes public, you don’t control what it destroys.”

Noah turned.

Grant stood beside the black SUV.

For the first time, the smile was gone.

Noah answered, “Maybe you should’ve thought of that before Monday.”

They left.

In the car, Rachel’s hands trembled on the steering wheel.

Noah noticed.

“You okay?”

“No.”

Neither was he.

His phone buzzed again.

This time the message came from Principal Ramirez.

NOAH — YOUR ACADEMIC HEARING HAS BEEN MOVED TO TOMORROW AT 10 A.M. PLEASE BRING A PARENT/GUARDIAN AND ANY RELEVANT MATERIALS.

Another message arrived almost immediately.

From the fellowship committee.

Dear Noah Walker,

We have received additional information concerning an ongoing disciplinary matter at Westbridge High School. Your application will remain under review pending clarification of your academic standing.

Noah stared.

Grant had promised he could help.

Less than fifteen minutes after Noah refused him, the problem became worse.

Rachel saw his face.

“What?”

He handed her the phone.

She read the email.

“Coincidence?” Noah asked.

Rachel did not answer.

When they arrived home, someone was waiting on the porch.

Mr. Kim.

The media teacher held a laptop bag against his chest.

He looked exhausted.

“I think we have a problem.”

Noah’s pulse jumped.

“What happened?”

Mr. Kim followed them inside.

“I tried accessing the original audio you sent me.”

“And?”

“My copy is intact.”

Noah exhaled.

“But someone logged into your school cloud account last night.”

Noah froze.

“What?”

“Your password was reset at 2:14 a.m.”

“That wasn’t me.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because the login came through a district administrator credential.”

Rachel stared at him.

“Someone at the school accessed his files?”

Mr. Kim nodded.

“And attempted to delete the folder.”

Noah felt suddenly light-headed.

“Attempted?”

Mr. Kim opened his laptop.

“I have automatic backup.”

He clicked through a series of logs.

“There’s more.”

On the screen was the user identification associated with the administrator override.

DREYNOLDS.

Noah stared at the name.

Coach Reynolds had not merely wanted the recording.

He had tried to erase it.

But beneath the deletion log was another entry.

A file had been opened first.

Not the Monday recording.

A different file Noah had forgotten existed.

Recorded two weeks earlier.

Mr. Kim looked at him.

“Do you know what’s on this?”

Noah shook his head.

Mr. Kim pressed play.

A woman’s voice filled the room.

Principal Ramirez.

Then Grant Mercer.

May you like

And what they heard next made Noah realize someone inside the school had been trying to warn Ramirez long before he ever found the spreadsheet.
