Chapter 10 - Vanessa’s ApologyVanessa asked to meet Emily.

Emily almost refused.

Then she agreed under one condition.

No Madison.

Not yet.

They met in the school library after hours.

Vanessa arrived alone.

No attorney.

No foundation title.

Just a mother who looked exhausted.

Emily remained in her wheelchair with her cast propped on a footrest.

Vanessa sat opposite.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily waited.

Vanessa swallowed.

“For the email.”

“Which one?”

Vanessa flinched.

Fair.

“The one about your medical judgment.”

Emily nodded.

“I used your injury because I thought it would make the complaint harder to ignore.”

“Yes.”

“That was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“I also helped Madison too much with the fellowship essay.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I thought I was helping.”

Emily looked at her.

“That word has caused a lot of damage lately.”

Vanessa gave a sad laugh.

“I know.”

Silence.

Then Emily asked:

“Why did you write so much of it?”

Vanessa looked embarrassed.

“Madison kept saying she didn’t know what to write.”

“So you wrote a paragraph.”

“Yes.”

“Then another.”

“Yes.”

“And when she got praised?”

Vanessa looked away.

“I liked it.”

Emily understood more than she wanted to.

“You liked being good at her success.”

Vanessa’s face crumpled slightly.

“Yes.”

That was painfully honest.

“My husband travels constantly. Madison’s older brother is in college. She and I became…”

Vanessa searched.

“A team.”

“And then winning became family work.”

“Yes.”

Emily nodded.

“That explains the essay.”

“Not the theft.”

“No.”

“Not what she did to you.”

“No.”

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“She lied to me too.”

Emily looked up.

“She told me you called her stupid.”

“I never did.”

“I know.”

“She said you mocked her writing.”

“No.”

“I know.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I kept believing versions that made it possible for me to rescue her.”

Emily was quiet.

Then:

“Maybe she kept giving you versions because you kept rescuing.”

Vanessa stared.

The sentence hurt.

Emily did not soften it.

Finally Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

They spoke for nearly an hour.

No reconciliation.

No friendship.

Vanessa asked if Emily intended to sue.

“I haven’t decided.”

“Fair.”

“Why do you care?”

“Because we may be liable.”

At least she was honest.

Emily smiled faintly.

“Talk to your lawyer about liability.”

Vanessa almost laughed.

Then she stood.

“Will you ever meet Madison?”

“Maybe.”

“When?”

“When the meeting is for me too.”

Vanessa nodded.

She understood.

Before leaving, she glanced toward the empty ceiling bracket where the camera had been.

“I keep thinking if that camera hadn’t been there…”

Emily interrupted.

“Don’t.”

Vanessa stopped.

“We could spend years imagining the worse version.”

“Yes.”

“I’d rather deal with the one that happened.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“You’re stronger than I am.”

Emily’s expression hardened.

“No.”

Vanessa blinked.

“Please don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Turn me into a lesson because I’m sitting in a wheelchair.”

Vanessa flushed.

“I didn’t mean—”

“I know.”

Emily exhaled.

“I’m not strong because I handled this well. Some days I didn’t.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

“This time for what?”

Vanessa almost smiled.

“Making you inspirational.”

Emily laughed.

May you like

“Accepted.”

It was the first apology that evening she accepted immediately.
