Chapter 7 - Grace Gets Suspended

On Friday morning Grace was suspended.

Not for theft.

For fighting.

She had not thrown a punch.

That did not matter at first.

Someone posted an edited hallway video showing Grace lunging toward Chloe Reynolds, Sierra’s closest friend, outside the cafeteria.

The clip began after Chloe grabbed Grace’s phone.

It ended before Grace stepped back.

Online it looked like Grace attacked her.

Dr. Moreno called both students into the office.

Grace was furious.

“She took my phone.”

Chloe shook her head.

“She shoved it in my face.”

“You were trying to delete a message.”

“I was moving it.”

“From my hand?”

Chloe’s eyes filled.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

Chloe refused to answer.

The full hallway camera footage showed what actually happened.

Chloe approached Grace.

Asked whether she had screenshots of Sierra’s texts.

Then grabbed the phone.

Grace tried to recover it.

Chloe stumbled into a wall.

No punches.

No deliberate strike.

But until security completed its review, school policy required a temporary removal because physical contact had occurred.

Grace felt sick.

“So Sierra can shove me into lockers for months and everybody calls it conflict, but I try to get my phone back and I’m suspended?”

Moreno looked ashamed.

“The removal is for today while we review evidence.”

“That’s still suspension.”

“Yes.”

“Then call it that.”

At home Grace paced.

Dana listened.

“You’re angry because they’re applying the rule.”

“I’m angry because they only discovered rules after I stopped being easy.”

Dana nodded.

“That is a fair thing to be angry about.”

By evening Keller called.

The suspension was rescinded.

The record would show Grace had acted to recover her property and there was insufficient basis for discipline.

Chloe received consequences for taking the phone.

Grace should have felt vindicated.

Instead she wanted to know why Chloe had done it.

Saturday morning Chloe’s mother called Dana.

Chloe wanted to talk.

They met at a coffee shop with both mothers present.

Chloe looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry.”

Grace said nothing.

Chloe continued.

“Sierra told me you had a screenshot from Tuesday night.”

“What screenshot?”

“Something from the prepaid number.”

“You tried to steal my phone for Sierra?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Chloe twisted a napkin.

“For Vivian.”

Grace went still.

Chloe explained that Vivian had called her the previous evening.

Vivian knew Chloe spent time with Sierra.

She said Grace might possess private family messages taken out of context.

She asked Chloe to “help prevent more damage.”

“Why would you do what she asked?”

Chloe stared at the table.

“Because she promised to talk to Stanford’s alumni committee for me.”

Grace almost could not believe it.

“You tried to take my phone for a recommendation?”

“I know.”

“No. I don’t think you do.”

Chloe started crying.

Grace felt no urge to comfort her.

Chloe opened her own phone.

“I brought something.”

She showed them messages from Sierra.

Tuesday, 4:51 p.m.

MOM WANTS ME TO GET THE BLUE BOOK FROM KELLER’S OFFICE.

Chloe:

WHY?

Sierra:

SHE SAYS THERE’S A MISTAKE THAT WILL MAKE THE FOUNDATION LOOK LIKE MONEY IS MISSING.

Chloe:

THEN LET AN ACCOUNTANT FIX IT.

Sierra:

SHE SAYS KELLER WILL USE IT AGAINST HER.

Five minutes later:

I HAVE GRACE’S ID.

Chloe:

WHY DO YOU HAVE THAT??

Sierra:

MIGHT AS WELL MAKE SOMETHING USEFUL OUT OF IT.

Grace stopped reading.

Dana’s face hardened.

“Send those to Detective Ortiz.”

Chloe nodded.

“There’s more.”

Sierra had sent another message at 6:03 p.m.

GOT THE ENVELOPE.

Then:

MOM IS LOSING IT BECAUSE THE CASH IS STILL INSIDE.

Chloe replied:

THEN PUT IT BACK.

Sierra:

CAN’T. CAMERA.

Then, finally:

SHE ONLY WANTED THE LEDGER. I TOOK EVERYTHING BECAUSE I PANICKED.

Grace sat back.

There it was.

A plausible chain.

Vivian told Sierra to retrieve the ledger.

Sierra stole the whole envelope.

Sierra planted Grace’s ID independently.

Then Vivian hid the jacket.

Chloe looked at Grace.

“I should’ve told someone Wednesday.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid Sierra would hate me.”

Grace almost laughed.

“Sierra hates me. You survive.”

Chloe flinched.

Grace did not apologize.

Afterward Dana asked if that had been too harsh.

“Yes,” Grace said.

“Do you regret it?”

“Not yet.”

The messages went to police.

Vivian’s attorney claimed they were incomplete and lacked context.

Sierra’s attorney scheduled a new formal interview.

On Sunday, Sierra finally admitted the basic story.

Vivian had asked her to retrieve the blue ledger.

She told Sierra it contained an accounting mistake that hostile board members could twist into accusations.

Sierra used a staff keycard she had secretly taken from the foundation office.

She entered Keller’s office.

She found the envelope.

She took it.

She planted Grace’s ID.

Then she brought everything home.

Vivian discovered the cash and checks still inside.

According to Sierra, Vivian became furious.

“Why?” Grace asked Ortiz later.

“Because Sierra says Vivian never wanted the money from Keller’s office removed.”

“Only the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“Where did the cash go?”

“Recovered from a locked safe in the Blake residence.”

All fourteen thousand eight hundred dollars.

Grace exhaled.

“So Sierra wasn’t stealing for money.”

“No.”

“She was stealing evidence.”

“That is one interpretation investigators are evaluating.”

Grace almost smiled.

Then Ortiz’s face became more serious.

“The financial audit found that Arden Educational Consulting received considerably more than seventy-six hundred dollars.”

“How much?”

“Over three years?”

Grace nodded.

“Four hundred and eighty-six thousand dollars.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Sierra had stolen one little blue ledger.

May you like

But what her mother wanted hidden stretched far beyond one school fundraiser.
