Chapter 18 - The Day Warren Lost ControlThe courtroom was smaller than Julian expected.

There were no dramatic chandeliers.

No polished mansion floors.

No flowers hiding cameras.

Just wooden benches, legal folders, and a judge who had read the submitted documents.

Warren sat beside his attorney.

His suit was immaculate.

His expression was not.

Julian sat with Nora on the opposite side of the aisle.

He had deliberately left Lily at home with her caregiver.

She didn't need to become part of another adult confrontation.

The judge began by explaining the limited purpose of the hearing.

The court was considering temporary protection of trust assets while disputed transactions were investigated.

No final determination of liability would be made that day.

Julian listened carefully.

He had expected the process to feel like justice.

Instead, it felt slow.

Precise.

Uncomfortable.

The attorney representing the petition described the apparent movement of trust funds through related vendors.

She referenced bank records, invoices, and the upcoming review required by the trust.

Warren's attorney challenged the conclusions.

She argued that some payments covered legitimate household and estate services.

She also emphasized that the financial investigation was incomplete.

The judge asked questions.

Which expenses had supporting contracts?

Who approved them?

Were there independent audits?

How were related-party transactions disclosed?

Warren answered through counsel when appropriate.

Julian watched his older brother.

For the first time, Warren couldn't interrupt him.

Couldn't change the subject to Julian's grief.

Couldn't simply announce that he knew best.

The documents remained on the table no matter how calmly Warren spoke.

Nora's team then presented the evidence connecting Northbridge to payments toward Warren's loan.

Warren's attorney acknowledged the transfers but contested their characterization.

The judge leaned forward.

"Was the trustee personally benefited by the movement of these funds?"

A long pause followed.

Warren's attorney answered carefully.

"The respondent disputes that the transactions constituted improper personal benefit, Your Honor."

The judge made a note.

Julian stared at his hands.

He wanted to look at Warren.

Instead, he remembered Lily stacking blocks on the nursery floor.

One yellow block.

One pink block.

A tiny tower she was proud to build.

Money couldn't replace those moments.

But Claire had intended it to give Lily opportunities.

Warren had treated it as something available for his own emergencies.

The hearing continued.

Evidence concerning the care invoices was discussed only to the extent relevant to the trust disbursements.

The judge did not try to decide whether Celeste had committed a crime.

That was a separate matter.

After reviewing the materials, the judge announced temporary measures.

An independent fiduciary would take over responsibility for administering the trust during the investigation.

Warren's authority to approve further payments would be suspended.

Relevant accounts and records would be preserved.

An independent accounting would proceed.

The court would revisit the disputes after additional evidence was produced.

Julian exhaled slowly.

It wasn't a verdict.

It wasn't complete restitution.

But Warren no longer controlled Lily's money.

Warren sat rigidly.

His attorney whispered something.

He shook his head.

Then the judge addressed both sides.

"This court expects full cooperation with the accounting process. Any further disputes about missing records or improper transfers will be addressed through the appropriate motions."

Julian kept his expression still.

When the hearing ended, Nora touched his arm.

"That's meaningful protection."

Julian nodded.

"Can Warren still access the accounts?"

"Not as trustee under the temporary order. The independent fiduciary will control administration subject to the court's directions."

Julian closed his eyes.

For the first time since the piano crashed, one part of Lily's future felt less exposed.

Outside the courtroom, reporters waited.

Julian had been warned they might be there.

He had prepared a short statement with Nora.

He stepped toward the microphones.

"My daughter deserves privacy and safety," he said. "The financial issues are being handled through the court. I won't comment on the ongoing investigations."

A reporter shouted.

"Mr. Mercer, what about the video of you destroying the piano?"

Julian stopped.

He looked directly toward the question.

"That was my decision. It was wrong, and I take responsibility for it."

Another reporter asked whether he intended to retaliate against Warren.

Julian shook his head.

"I'm seeking accountability, not retaliation."

He walked away.

Then he saw Warren standing beneath the courthouse steps.

For several seconds, the brothers stared at each other.

Warren approached.

"You humiliated me."

Julian answered quietly.

"You did that yourself."

Warren's face tightened.

"You think the court order means you've won?"

"No."

Julian held his gaze.

"It means Lily's money is protected while the truth is examined."

Warren stepped closer.

"You have no idea how much I sacrificed for this family."

Julian felt an old childhood anger stir.

Then disappear.

"Maybe you sacrificed things," he said. "But you didn't have the right to sacrifice my daughter."

Warren opened his mouth.

No answer came.

Julian walked past him.

In the car, Nora's phone rang.

She listened carefully.

Then turned toward Julian.

"The investigators have requested a formal interview with Celeste about the recordings."

Julian stared through the windshield.

For weeks, Celeste had insisted Lily was difficult.

Now she would be asked to explain what she'd actually done.

And the expensive gown, the diamonds, and the Mercer name would not answer for her.
