Chapter 2

Daniel watched the recording twice in the bridal preparation room while Lily sat against his side and Owen refused to take off his navy waistcoat.

The video lasted twenty-three seconds. It wasn't a complete account of the confrontation, but Evelyn's words were unmistakable.

"I told you to delete V-seventeen. Give it here."

A server had brought juice and a blanket. Lily accepted the blanket only when Owen tucked it around her feet. Every time someone knocked, she jerked so violently that juice rippled in her cup.

"Nobody comes in unless I say so," Daniel told them.

"Even Grandma?" Owen asked.

"Even Grandma."

A uniformed officer named Elena Perez arrived with another officer shortly afterward. Daniel told her what he had witnessed, including the moment he had grabbed Evelyn's arm. He did not make his intervention sound gentler than it was.

"She fell when I pushed her arm away. I was trying to stop the rod."

Perez wrote it down. "We will speak to her and the witnesses separately. Has either child been struck?"

Owen shook his head, then hesitated. "Not tonight."

Daniel turned toward him. Owen stared at the carpet.

Perez softened her voice. "Can you tell me what you mean?"

"I don't want to yet."

"That's okay. We can arrange a more comfortable interview later."

Daniel wanted to demand an answer. Instead, he heard Claire's voice in his memory: When Owen goes quiet, don't fill the silence for him.

He pressed his lips together.

At the doorway, Grant Bell appeared in a dark suit with a venue badge clipped discreetly beneath his lapel. "Mr. Mercer, we need that guest video removed. There are privacy rules."

Perez turned. "I'm Officer Perez. Please identify yourself."

Grant's smile faltered. "I'm the operations manager. The camera system had a brief interruption, so we're trying to gather accurate information."

"What interruption?" Perez asked.

"A routine maintenance reset."

"During the incident?"

"Apparently."

Daniel remembered seeing Grant walk toward the west security station as soon as Evelyn went down. He took out his phone and made a note of the time.

Perez instructed Grant not to delete or alter any recordings and requested that the venue preserve the relevant material. Grant agreed too quickly.

When he left, Owen held up his phone.

"I only took one picture."

The image showed a cream-colored sheet on Evelyn's office desk. Much of it was blurred by movement, but at the top Daniel could read: VALE HALL OPERATIONS—TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION V-17.

Below that, two names were clear.

OWEN MERCER. LILY MERCER.

And near the bottom, beneath a signature line, were the typed words DANIEL MERCER, TRUSTEE.

Daniel's stomach tightened.

Claire had inherited a minority interest in Vale Hall, the event venue her parents had built. After her death, that interest passed into trusts for Owen and Lily. Daniel was their trustee. He reviewed financial statements occasionally, but Rose and Evelyn ran daily operations.

"Why did you take this?" he asked.

Owen licked his lips. "Because Aunt Evelyn said you already signed it. But you told me last month you never take money from our college accounts."

"Our what?" Daniel asked.

"She called it payment for using the ballroom. She said Grandma needed our names on it."

Lily tugged Daniel's sleeve. "Aunt Evelyn said the paper was grown-up business. Then she said we were bad for listening."

Daniel enlarged the image. The amount was cut off. The date wasn't.

It had been prepared three days earlier, on a day Daniel had spent working in Cincinnati.

Someone knocked again. This time it was Rose Vale, sixty-six, dressed in charcoal silk with a pearl brooch. Her hair was pinned perfectly. She kept her eyes on the children, not their father.

"What an awful misunderstanding," she said, sweeping in before Daniel invited her. "Evelyn is injured, and these poor children are hysterical."

"Stop," Daniel said.

Rose blinked. "Excuse me?"

"Don't call them hysterical."

Her expression cooled. "Daniel, we must protect the family. The wedding is already ruined."

"They were threatened in a room full of people."

"My daughter says Owen took confidential documents. If he hands over the phone, we can handle all this privately."

Owen's fingers went white around the case.

Daniel stepped between Rose and the sofa.

"You can speak to the police, Rose. You cannot speak to them tonight."

She looked past his shoulder. "Owen, darling, tell Grandma where you found that V-seventeen sheet."

No one in the room had told her Owen photographed a sheet.

Daniel felt the implication settle between them.

Rose had come to reclaim evidence, not comfort her grandchildren.
