Chapter 4 - Lexi’s Copy

Lexi Vaughn did not return to school.

Her mother withdrew her temporarily.

That did not stop the video from appearing online.

At 7:14 on Saturday morning, Mia woke to seventy-three notifications.

The clip showed only thirty-two seconds.

It began with Mia on the floor.

Trash already covering her.

Hailey was barely visible.

Lexi’s voice could be heard laughing.

Then Mia shouted:

“You’re disgusting.”

The video ended before Mrs. Carter appeared.

The caption read:

Girl starts restroom fight, then cries when people film her.

Mia’s stomach dropped.

“Mom!”

Laura ran upstairs.

She watched once.

“Don’t respond.”

“It makes it look like I did something.”

“I know.”

“Everybody’s sharing it.”

“Don’t respond.”

Mia threw her phone onto the bed.

“That’s easy for you to say.”

“No. It’s difficult for me to say because I want to reply to every person.”

Mia almost laughed.

Laura called Brooks.

The investigator asked for the link and timestamps.

Then something unexpected happened.

Lexi contacted Mia directly.

I didn’t post that.

Mia stared.

She typed:

You filmed it.

I know.

Who else had it?

No answer.

Then:

Hailey.

Mia’s heart raced.

Lexi had sent the original to Hailey while they were still in the restroom.

Before Principal Cole arrived.

Hailey’s phone had later been taken home by her father after consultation with the school.

No forensic preservation order existed yet.

“Mom.”

Laura immediately called Brooks again.

By noon, Richard Monroe’s attorney confirmed Hailey’s phone had been “reset due to security concerns” after the incident.

Investigator Brooks went silent when she heard.

Laura did not.

“You erased her phone?”

The attorney insisted no litigation hold or law-enforcement seizure order had been in place at the time.

Technically true.

But Hailey and her father knew an investigation had begun.

Brooks referred the issue to district counsel and local authorities for review.

Mia’s anger became physical.

She paced the kitchen.

“They deleted everything.”

“We don’t know that.”

“They reset it.”

“Cloud backups may exist.”

“What if they don’t?”

“We use other evidence.”

Mia stopped.

“Why does everyone keep needing evidence after people already complained?”

Laura didn’t answer.

Because she couldn’t.

Later, Lexi called.

Mia nearly rejected it.

Laura said, “Speaker.”

Lexi sounded like she had been crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Mia said nothing.

“I didn’t post the clip.”

“You recorded me.”

“I know.”

“You told me to say something sad.”

“I know.”

“You laughed.”

“I know.”

Mia’s voice hardened.

“So what exactly are you sorry for? The part that got you in trouble?”

Lexi cried harder.

Laura did not intervene.

Finally Lexi said:

“I thought Hailey was going to scare you.”

“She dumped garbage on me.”

“I know.”

“Why were you there?”

Silence.

“Lexi.”

“Because Hailey said you were talking about Sophie.”

Mia froze.

“What?”

“She knew Sophie messaged you.”

“That happened after.”

“No. Before the restroom.”

Mia stared at her mother.

“That’s impossible.”

Lexi sounded confused.

“Hailey said you’d been asking questions about what happened last year.”

“I hadn’t.”

Mia had barely known Sophie existed.

Someone had told Hailey Mia was investigating her before Mia actually was.

“Who told Hailey?”

“I don’t know.”

“Think.”

“She said Whitmore warned her.”

Mia’s stomach dropped.

Vice Principal Dana Whitmore.

Before Mia’s assault, Whitmore had allegedly told Hailey that Mia was asking about Sophie.

Why?

Brooks was informed.

Whitmore denied it.

Then Lexi supplied a screenshot.

A message Hailey had sent that morning:

Whitmore says Dawson’s digging around about last year. Fix it before my dad hears.

Mia stared at the timestamp.

10:12 a.m.

The restroom incident happened at 12:36.

Investigator Brooks compared school records.

Mia had never spoken to Whitmore about Sophie.

She had never searched school files.

Never emailed anyone.

But somebody using Whitmore’s name had told Hailey otherwise.

That meant either Hailey was lying to manipulate Lexi—

or Whitmore had been feeding Hailey information about students behind the scenes.

Then Brooks found another message in Lexi’s backup.

Hailey:

She’ll fold. They always do.

Lexi:

What if she reports?

Hailey:

Whitmore makes it “peer conflict.” Dad handles the rest.

Mia read the words until they blurred.

This wasn’t confidence after one lucky escape.

This was a system Hailey believed she understood.

May you like

And she believed Mia was simply the next person it would swallow.
