Chapter 1 - Keep Recording

Emma Parker was already on the cafeteria floor when the laughter started.
Rice clung to the knees of her jeans. A carton of milk had burst beside her hand, sending a white stream through scattered vegetables and beneath the metal bench. Her tray had skidded almost six feet across the polished tile after Madison Reed kicked the side of the table hard enough to knock Emma off balance.
For one shocked second, Emma heard nothing.
Then came the phones.
They rose around her like a wall of black glass.
“Keep filming!” somebody shouted.
“This is going everywhere.”
Madison stood over her in spotless white sneakers, blond hair pulled into the same perfect ponytail she wore in every student-council photograph.
“You seriously thought you could sit here?” Madison asked.
Emma looked up.
Madison smiled.
“Nobody wants you here, Emma.”
The laughter grew.
Emma’s fingers pressed into the wet floor.
Three hours earlier, she had promised Lucy she wouldn’t lose control.
Her thirteen-year-old sister had been sitting in the nurse’s office then, wrapped in a gray school blanket despite insisting she wasn’t cold. Her hands had been shaking so badly that she could barely unlock her smartwatch.
Emma could still hear her whisper.
Please don’t make me tell it twice.
So Emma had listened once.
She had copied everything.
And then she had gone looking for Principal Howard.
Instead, she had found Madison.
Now Madison crouched until they were nearly eye level.
“Go ahead,” she said softly. “Tell everyone what a pathetic loser you are.”
“Say it!” a boy yelled.
Emma recognized him as Kyle Benton, one of Madison’s usual shadows.
Another student held a phone inches from Emma’s face.
Emma saw herself reflected in the screen—wet eyes, stained sweater, strands of dark hair stuck to her cheek.
For a few seconds, the humiliation was almost enough to crush what remained of her resolve.
She thought of simply getting up and leaving.
Then she remembered Lucy’s wrist.
Not bruised.
Not bloody.
Just red from where she had pulled against the metal equipment-cage door after Madison and two other girls locked her inside.
Emma’s trembling stopped.
She pushed herself onto one knee.
Madison straightened.
“Oh, look. She found some dignity.”
Emma rose completely.
Food streaked her clothes, but she didn’t brush it away.
Instead, she faced the nearest phone.
“Keep recording.”
The laughter weakened.
Emma looked from one student to another.
“You’re going to need those videos when the police ask who watched this happen and laughed.”
Silence moved across the cafeteria faster than the laughter had.
Kyle lowered his phone slightly.
A girl near the vending machines stopped smiling.
Madison’s expression hardened.
“Police?” she repeated. “For knocking over a lunch tray?”
Emma turned to her.
“I wasn’t sitting here alone because nobody wanted me.”
Madison’s smile vanished.
“I was waiting for Principal Howard so I could report what you did to my thirteen-year-old sister in the girls’ locker room this morning.”
Someone gasped.
Madison went pale.
It lasted only a second before she recovered.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Emma stepped closer.
“Yes, you do.”
Madison laughed too loudly.
“Your sister is a liar.”
That sentence changed everything.
Emma had expected denial.
She had not expected Madison to reveal that she already knew Lucy was accusing her.
Emma stared at her.
“I never said Lucy accused you.”
Madison’s mouth closed.
A low murmur spread through the students.
Kyle’s phone went back up.
Emma reached into the inside pocket of her backpack and pulled out a small black flash drive attached to a purple cord.
Madison’s eyes dropped to it.
There.
Fear.
Real fear.
Emma saw it.
“So that’s why you came over here,” Emma said quietly.
“I came over because you were sitting at our table.”
“No.”
Emma lifted the flash drive.
“You wanted to know whether I had this.”
Madison lunged.
She stopped herself before touching Emma, but the movement was fast enough that several students jumped backward.
“What is that?” Madison demanded.
Emma’s heart hammered.
“Something Lucy’s smartwatch saved automatically.”
Madison said nothing.
Emma continued.
“And screenshots from the messages sent to her before you trapped her in the equipment cage.”
“You’re insane.”
“And a copy of the voice recording.”
Madison’s face changed again.
This time everyone saw it.
“What recording?” Kyle asked.
Madison spun toward him.
“Shut up.”
The cafeteria doors opened.
Principal Robert Howard entered with school counselor Elena Alvarez behind him.
Howard took in the spilled food, the circle of students, the phones, Emma’s stained clothing, and Madison standing only two feet away.
“What happened?”
No one answered.
Then one student near the back said, “Madison kicked the table.”
Another voice followed.
“She knocked Emma down.”
Howard looked at Madison.
“Office. Now.”
Madison folded her arms.
“She threatened me with the police.”
“I heard that part,” Howard said. “Why?”
Emma walked toward him and held out the flash drive.
Howard reached for it.
Before he touched it, Madison said, “You can’t look at that.”
Every head turned.
Howard slowly lowered his hand.
“Why not?”
Madison’s face tightened.
“My mother is on the school board.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“You need to call her before you do anything.”
Emma felt Ms. Alvarez move closer to her.
“Emma,” the counselor said softly, “where is Lucy?”
“In the nurse’s office.”
Ms. Alvarez’s expression changed.
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
“Was she injured?”
“Not seriously. But she was locked inside the equipment cage for twenty-three minutes. Her phone was smashed. They threatened her.”
Howard went still.
“They?”
Emma looked directly at Madison.
“Madison Reed, Tessa Grant, and Brooke Lawson.”
A chair scraped behind them.
Tessa was standing near the cafeteria exit.
For one second she and Madison stared at each other.
Then Tessa ran.
Howard called after her, but she disappeared through the doors.
Madison whispered a curse.
Emma saw something else now.
Not arrogance.
Panic.
Principal Howard turned to Ms. Alvarez.
“Stay with Emma. I’m contacting school security and Lucy’s mother.”
“My mother’s already coming,” Emma said.
Howard looked at the flash drive again.
“And the police?”
Emma swallowed.
“I called them before lunch.”
Madison stared at her.
“You did what?”
Emma held her gaze.
“They told me an officer would meet us here.”
As if summoned by the words, the cafeteria doors opened again.
This time a uniformed school resource officer stepped inside with a second officer Emma had never seen.
The room became utterly silent.
Madison slowly backed away.
And for the first time that day, Emma understood why.
Madison wasn’t afraid of what Lucy had told her.
May you like
She was afraid of what Lucy had recorded.
