Chapter 5 - The Cedar Chest

Daniel wanted to drive to the cabin immediately.

Linda stopped him.

“Someone sent you a photograph to provoke exactly that reaction.”

“So I should sit here?”

“You should behave like someone who knows there may be an active fraud investigation.”

Evan hated that she was right.

The county sheriff near the cabin agreed to send a deputy to inspect the property.

Three hours later, Daniel received the call.

The back door had been forced.

Nothing obvious was missing from the main rooms.

The cedar chest had been opened.

But it had not been emptied.

Inside, beneath old blankets, the deputy found a sealed plastic document case.

Daniel and Evan drove there with Linda the next morning.

The cabin smelled of pine, dust and old winters.

Evan had spent summers there when Julia was alive.

He remembered her making pancakes while Daniel and Adrian argued over fishing lures.

That memory now felt contaminated.

The cedar chest stood beneath a window.

Its brass lock was broken.

Inside the plastic case were invoices, handwritten notes and printed bank records.

Julia had documented the East Harbor payments.

She had also written a timeline.

One note read:

A. says these are temporary transfers. D. keeps accepting explanations because repayment eventually appears. That does not make it legitimate.

Daniel read it twice.

“He repaid some of it.”

Linda looked at him.

“You knew?”

“Not this.”

“You said Julia confronted you.”

“She told me Adrian had borrowed company money without authorization once.”

Evan’s eyes sharpened.

“Borrowed.”

“That’s what he called it.”

“How much?”

“Seventy thousand.”

“And you let him stay?”

“He paid it back.”

Evan turned away.

Daniel followed.

“I thought I was protecting the company.”

“You were protecting Adrian.”

“I thought those were the same thing.”

“That seems to be the problem.”

Daniel had no answer.

Near the bottom of the case, they found an envelope addressed to Daniel in Julia’s handwriting.

He opened it.

The letter was not dramatic.

That somehow made it worse.

Julia wrote that she loved Daniel.

She also wrote that she was tired of arguing with someone who treated loyalty as proof.

She feared Adrian would eventually do something too large to repair.

If Daniel ever read the letter after things had gone wrong, she asked him not to make the same mistake with their children.

Listen before defending yourself.

Daniel stopped reading.

Evan looked toward the window.

Outside, mountains rose behind bare trees.

“Mom never gave you that?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Evan did.

“She gave up.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Linda continued sorting documents.

A bank record caught her attention.

“Daniel.”

She placed it on the table.

Five years earlier, East Harbor Equipment had transferred $70,000 back to Mercer Ridge.

Three days later, Daniel had signed a document closing the internal review.

But another page showed a second payment.

$35,000.

From East Harbor.

To an account ending in 4418.

Daniel did not recognize it.

Linda photographed the page.

“We trace that.”

Evan searched the remaining papers.

He found an old business card with a handwritten number.

NORTHSTAR?

The company had not existed under that name yet.

But Julia had written the word.

“How could Mom know Northstar five years ago?”

Marisol answered when they called her.

She searched archived vendor applications.

“There was a rejected vendor in 2021 called Northstar Industrial Supply.”

“Owner?”

Marisol paused.

“Adrian Mercer.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“He registered a vendor under his own name?”

“It never became active. Compliance rejected it for related-party conflict.”

Evan looked at Julia’s note again.

His mother had seen the pattern forming.

Adrian had simply waited.

Then hidden it better.

As they prepared to leave, Daniel’s phone rang.

Marisol again.

Her voice was different.

“Daniel, you need to come to the office.”

“What happened?”

“Our acquisition buyer just suspended due diligence.”

Linda stood.

“Why?”

“Anonymous fraud allegations.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Against Adrian?”

“No.”

Marisol hesitated.

“Against Evan.”

Evan stared at the phone.

“What?”

“They’re claiming your son hacked Mercer Ridge’s accounting system and manipulated vendor records.”

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time since the birthday party, his first reaction was not suspicion.

It was belief.

He looked directly at Evan.

“I know you didn’t.”

Three simple words.

They should have comforted him.

May you like

Instead Evan thought about how expensive they had become.
