Chapter 9 - Daniel’s Choice

Mercer Ridge’s board met at seven the next morning.
Adrian appeared by video.
He looked rested.
Confident.
Offended.
Daniel had not slept.
Evan watched from Linda’s office because he was not allowed into the board session.
Through the glass wall, he could see his father fighting the instinct to shout.
Adrian spoke calmly.
He claimed Daniel had become emotionally unstable after a family dispute.
He claimed the forged agreements were real.
He claimed Evan had manipulated company records to frame him.
Then he made his most dangerous move.
He proposed the board temporarily suspend Daniel’s authority.
Two directors looked uncertain.
One actually nodded.
Linda had prepared Daniel for this.
Do not make it personal.
Make it provable.
Daniel presented the bank’s fraud hold.
Then Helen’s preliminary findings.
Then IT access logs.
Then the video from Grace’s phone.
Adrian’s face changed when his own voice said, Get the boy out of the house tonight.
“What does that have to do with corporate finance?” he demanded.
Daniel answered, “Maybe nothing.”
Evan heard the restraint in his voice.
“Or maybe it shows you were trying to remove the person who discovered the invoices.”
Adrian laughed.
“He’s sixteen.”
“Yes.”
“A child.”
Daniel looked through the glass.
Directly at Evan.
“And I made the mistake of thinking his age made his facts less important.”
Evan felt something shift.
Not forgiveness.
But movement.
The board refused to suspend Daniel.
Instead, it placed Adrian on administrative leave pending independent investigation.
His system access was revoked.
Adrian disconnected without saying goodbye.
Afterward Daniel found Evan in the hallway.
“I should have done that at the party.”
“What?”
“Asked what could be proved.”
Evan shoved his hands into his pockets.
“You should have asked me.”
“I know.”
“No. You keep saying that.”
Daniel stopped.
Evan faced him.
“You want one apology to turn me back into the son who trusts you.”
“I don’t.”
“Good.”
Daniel absorbed that.
“What do you want?”
Evan thought about it.
“I want you to stop telling me what you’ve learned and show me.”
Daniel nodded.
That afternoon he did.
He called every person who had been at Grace’s birthday.
One by one.
He told them Evan had not stolen the phone.
He told them Claire had planted it.
He told them his own behavior had been wrong.
He did not say the matter was a misunderstanding.
He did not blame stress.
When he reached Aunt Rebecca, she said, “Daniel, you don’t have to humiliate yourself.”
Evan was sitting ten feet away.
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes, I do.”
Later, Grace asked Daniel to call Emily’s parents again because Emily had told two classmates.
He did.
By evening, Evan was exhausted by hearing his own humiliation corrected.
But he also understood something.
Daniel was not hiding from it.
Then Linda called.
Claire wanted another meeting.
This time without her lawyer.
Linda refused.
Claire agreed to come anyway with counsel present.
She brought a sealed envelope.
“I kept this from Adrian.”
Inside were photocopies of handwritten instructions.
Dates.
Amounts.
Passwords.
One page listed Evan’s movements.
Another said:
PHONE / PARTY / BAG / MAKE D. SEE HIM AS PROBLEM.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Claire looked at Evan.
“I wrote that part down because I couldn’t believe he was asking me to do it.”
Evan stared at her.
“You still did it.”
“Yes.”
“What do you want me to say?”
“Nothing.”
Claire slid another page across the table.
At the bottom was a sentence in Adrian’s handwriting.
AFTER E. IS OUT, GET OFFICE TOKEN AND RED FILE.
Helen leaned over it.
“Office token?”
Daniel went still.
He stood so quickly his chair hit the wall.
“What?”
“My hardware security key.”
“For what?”
“Company archive access.”
“Where is it?”
Daniel stared toward home as though he could see through miles of distance.
“In the red binder.”
Linda closed her eyes.
“If Adrian has the binder, he may have the authentication token.”
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A system notification from Mercer Ridge.
ARCHIVE EXPORT INITIATED.
Someone was accessing five years of corporate records.
