Chapter 11 - The Man with the Key

Martin denied it immediately.

“That’s a lie.”

Evelyn did not answer.

Adrian was still on speaker.

“Ask him where he was Sunday night when your father filled his pill organizer.”

Martin stepped toward the phone.

“You son of a—”

Ortiz raised one hand.

“Quiet.”

Adrian continued.

“Thomas summoned Martin that evening. He was there for almost two hours.”

Martin’s face reddened.

“I was there.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You never told us.”

“Because it had nothing to do with his death.”

“How do you know?”

“I didn’t touch his medication.”

Adrian laughed through the phone.

“Of course.”

Ortiz interrupted.

“Mr. Mercer, where are you right now?”

He disconnected.

The silence afterward felt poisonous.

Evelyn turned to Martin.

“Start talking.”

Martin sat heavily.

“Thomas called me Sunday night because he had discovered the consulting payments.”

“The payments to you?”

“Yes.”

“He threatened to report me.”

“And then?”

“I agreed to help.”

“You said that happened later.”

Martin rubbed his face.

“I simplified the timeline.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“Again.”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

Martin looked older by the second.

“Thomas kept his medications in the kitchen. I saw the organizer. I never touched it.”

“Was Adrian there?”

“No.”

“Mara?”

“No.”

“The housekeeper?”

“She had left.”

“So only you and Thomas.”

“That evening.”

Ortiz asked, “Did anyone else have a key?”

Martin nodded.

“Evelyn. Adrian. The housekeeper.”

“Stephen?”

“No.”

They began reconstructing access.

Security records from Thomas’s property had been deleted after his death.

But the home’s smart alarm company retained historical entry logs for five years.

Ortiz requested them.

At midnight, preliminary records arrived.

Sunday:

Martin entered 7:04 p.m.

Left 8:51.

No other entries.

Monday:

Housekeeper 8:02 a.m.

Left 3:44 p.m.

Tuesday:

Thomas himself.

Wednesday.

Thursday.

Friday.

Then Saturday morning, the day of Thomas’s death:

An entry at 7:18 a.m.

Using code 4419.

Evelyn knew Thomas’s code.

1938.

The housekeeper had another.

Martin another.

“Whose is 4419?”

Martin looked down.

“Adrian’s.”

Evelyn stared.

Thomas had supposedly disabled Adrian’s access weeks earlier.

“How?”

Martin whispered, “I reactivated it.”

“Why?”

“Adrian told me he needed documents from Thomas’s office for the foundation audit.”

“You let him in.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Friday evening.”

“You knew Dad didn’t want him there.”

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

“You gave Adrian access to my father’s house less than twenty-four hours before he died.”

Martin’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I didn’t.”

Evelyn stood.

“Get out.”

“Evelyn—”

“Get out.”

Ortiz intervened calmly.

“Mr. Vale, I need you to remain available for questioning.”

He nodded.

Before leaving, Martin looked at Evelyn.

“I am sorry.”

She did not answer.

At 2:00 a.m., Evelyn sat alone in her father’s study.

Mara had gone to give a formal statement.

Police technicians worked upstairs in Adrian’s office.

Evelyn opened the ledger from Box 317 again.

Several pages near the back documented Thomas’s final week.

Friday:

M.V. reactivated A.M. access. Unknown to A.M.? Confirm.

Thomas knew.

He had discovered Martin’s betrayal.

Saturday:

A.M. entered 7:18. Stayed 14 min. Camera offline 7:11–7:36.

Evelyn stared.

Thomas had written this before leaving for the cardiologist.

Below it:

Organizer changed? Two white tablets. Taking to Solis.

Her father had noticed.

A final line followed.

If medication proves deliberate, do not confront A.M. alone.

Thomas had intended to investigate.

He had not swallowed blindly.

Perhaps he had taken the tablets with him.

Then why did he suffer a hemorrhage?

Evelyn turned the page.

Empty.

She examined the binding.

One page had been torn out.

Not recently.

The fibers were old.

Someone had removed Thomas’s final note.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

The missing ledger page.

Under it:

Your father gave this to me before he died.

Then another message.

Mara doesn’t know I have it. Adrian doesn’t know I’m alive.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

She typed:

Who are you?

May you like

The answer came.

The person Thomas was protecting you from knowing about.
