Chapter 8 - Nineteen Minutes

They watched the original garage recording in Mara’s car.
No one spoke during the first seven minutes.
Adrian arrived at 2:41.
Mara arrived two minutes later.
The folder changed hands.
The conversation was exactly as Evelyn had already heard.
“She still thinks the house belongs to both of you.”
“Not after tomorrow.”
Then Thomas stepped into view.
Not merely a voice.
Her father appeared from behind the Jaguar.
Alive.
Three years younger than the last image Evelyn carried in her mind.
Gray hair.
Plaid overshirt.
Angry eyes.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Thomas looked directly at Adrian.
“You’re done.”
Adrian spun.
Mara dropped the folder.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
“My daughter’s house.”
Thomas pointed toward the camera without seeming to notice it.
“My family’s money. I think that gives me standing.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“You’ve been following me?”
“I’ve been following the money.”
Thomas turned to Mara.
“And you.”
Mara closed her eyes in the present-day car.
Onscreen, she whispered, “Thomas, I can explain.”
“No. You can confess.”
Thomas produced several pages.
“Hawthorne Advisory has billed Eleanor’s foundation three-point-one million dollars.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Consulting services.”
“Name one consultant.”
No answer.
Thomas continued.
“The company’s registered agent leads to a Nevada firm. The Nevada firm leads to an account controlled by Northwood Residential Holdings.”
Mara looked at Adrian.
That reaction surprised Evelyn.
Mara had not known.
Onscreen, she said, “You told me Northwood was just for the house.”
Adrian ignored her.
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“There it is. Even your accomplice doesn’t know the whole scheme.”
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“You should be careful with words like accomplice.”
Thomas looked at Mara.
“You forged legal summaries.”
“I didn’t forge signatures.”
“Not yet.”
Adrian stepped between them.
“What do you want?”
“The house transfer stops. The foundation gets every dollar back. Mara reports herself to the bar. You resign from every Hart entity.”
“You don’t control Evelyn.”
“No.”
Thomas’s voice softened.
“And that was my mistake.”
Evelyn leaned closer to the screen.
Thomas continued.
“I spent years trying to protect her by controlling what reached her. I told myself it was fatherhood.”
Adrian smirked.
“Finally, something we agree on.”
Thomas ignored him.
“I should have told her six months ago.”
Adrian went still.
Mara did too.
“Told her what?” Mara asked.
Thomas looked at Adrian.
“That Mercer Development would have collapsed four years ago if Evelyn’s mother hadn’t quietly guaranteed the original loan.”
Evelyn stared.
Her mother?
Eleanor had died before Adrian’s company became successful.
Thomas continued.
“Eleanor believed in him. Against my advice.”
Adrian’s voice became sharp.
“Don’t.”
“She put four million dollars at risk.”
“Thomas.”
“When the company began failing, Adrian started moving foundation money because he thought he was taking back what the Hart family owed him.”
“That is not what happened.”
“Then explain it to Evelyn.”
Silence.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Tomorrow morning.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You will destroy her memory of her mother.”
“No. You did that when you stole from Eleanor’s foundation.”
The argument intensified.
Adrian accused Thomas of humiliating him for years.
Thomas admitted he had never respected Adrian’s financial judgment.
Mara begged both men to stop.
Then came the line Evelyn had heard.
Thomas said, “If anything happens to her, I’m taking this to the police.”
Adrian laughed.
“That doesn’t even make sense.”
“It will.”
Thomas reached into his pocket.
He held up a small recorder.
“I’ve documented enough.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Give me that.”
“No.”
He moved toward Thomas.
Mara stepped between them.
“Adrian, stop.”
Nothing violent happened.
No attack.
No secret murder.
Instead Thomas delivered something far more devastating.
“I changed my estate plan yesterday.”
Adrian froze.
“You what?”
“You no longer have any contingent rights to the house.”
Mara stared.
Thomas continued.
“And if Evelyn dies before the trust terminates, the property goes to the foundation. Not to you.”
Present-day Evelyn stopped breathing.
There it was.
Her father’s warning suddenly made sense.
Adrian could not gain the house through Evelyn’s death.
Thomas had deliberately removed that incentive.
Onscreen, Adrian whispered, “You think I would hurt my wife?”
Thomas answered:
“I think desperate men do things they once swore they never would.”
Then Thomas looked toward Mara.
“If something happens to me before I speak to Evelyn, you tell her everything.”
Mara began crying beside Evelyn.
The recording continued.
Thomas left at 2:57.
Adrian waited until the garage door closed.
Then turned toward Mara.
“You will not tell her.”
Mara whispered, “He’s going to the police.”
“No.”
Adrian picked up the folder.
“He won’t get the chance.”
Evelyn froze the video.
No one moved.

Martin finally whispered:
“That sentence is why I thought Thomas’s death might not have been natural.”
