Chapter 2 - The Paper Nobody Was Supposed to See"Turn that microphone off!"

Denise Mercer's voice cut through the auditorium.
But the microphone was already silent.
Kayla had stepped away from it.
The damage, if that was what Denise wanted to call it, had been done.
Parents were turning toward Julian.
Graduates were whispering.
Several people had their phones raised, recording the confrontation.
Julian looked from Kayla to his mother.
"She's lying."
His voice sounded less certain than his expression.
Denise rushed down the side steps.
"Everyone, please remain seated. We are continuing with the ceremony."
But Walter was standing now.
He had one hand against the chair in front of him for support.
His other hand reached for Kayla.
"Baby," he whispered when she approached, "what did you show them?"
Kayla placed the folded paper in his palm.
"The screenshot from Julian's video."
Walter turned it over.
On one side was the grainy image of a school storage corridor.
On the other was something entirely different.
A photocopy of a scholarship deposit receipt.
Walter's face changed.
"Where did you get this?"
"You left it in Mom's old recipe book."
His fingers tightened.
"Kayla, I told you not to go through those papers."
"I know."
"That wasn't a suggestion."
She looked at him through her tears.
"And you told me never to let somebody destroy an innocent person just because they have more power."
For a moment, he had no answer.
Denise reached them.
"Kayla, you need to come with me."
"No."
"This isn't a request."
Walter moved between them.
"She's eighteen, Denise."
Denise stared at her father.
"You don't understand what she's doing."
"Then explain it."
Her jaw tightened.
Around them, the ceremony was resuming awkwardly.
The principal had taken the microphone and was calling the next group of graduates.
Applause rose in uneven bursts.
Denise leaned closer.
"That document is confidential."
Kayla glanced at the paper.
"Which one? The video screenshot or the bank deposit receipt?"
Denise froze.
It lasted less than a second.
But Kayla saw it.
The same frightened expression she'd noticed when Denise first saw the paper at the podium.
"How do you know about that receipt?" Denise asked.
Walter took one slow breath.
"I gave it to her."
"No, you didn't."
Denise's response was immediate.
Too immediate.
Walter studied her.
"How would you know what I gave my granddaughter?"
Denise looked away.
Julian appeared beside them, moving quickly through the row.
"Mom, tell them she's making this up."
"Not now, Julian."
He pointed at Kayla.
"She's accusing me of a crime in front of everybody."
Kayla faced him.
"I'm accusing you of putting an envelope in Grandpa's locker."
"That's ridiculous."
"Then why can I see your face reflected in the trophy case?"
Julian opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Kayla continued.
"The video you posted begins with Grandpa opening the locker. You told everybody he was caught hiding money."
"Because he was!"
"Your own recording shows somebody standing outside the locker before Grandpa even arrived."
Julian's eyes moved toward Denise.
Kayla noticed.
That glance was more revealing than his words.
"You knew the video was edited," she said.
Julian's cheeks darkened.
"Everybody edits videos."
"Not everybody uses them to accuse their grandfather of stealing."
Denise grabbed Julian's elbow.
"Enough."
Walter stepped back.
His face had gone pale beneath his brown skin.
"Denise."
She wouldn't look at him.
"Did you know about that video before it was posted?"
"Dad, please."
"Answer me."
A bell chimed through the auditorium speakers as another graduate crossed the stage.
The sound seemed absurdly cheerful.
Denise lowered her voice.
"We are not discussing this here."
Walter looked at his daughter for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
"All right."
Kayla felt something sink inside her.
Was he surrendering?
But Walter turned toward her.
"Get your diploma, sweetheart."
"Grandpa—"
"Get it. You earned it."
He returned to his seat.
Kayla stayed beside him until the ceremony coordinator called her name.
She walked across the stage to receive her diploma while the audience applauded with unusual intensity.
She should have felt triumphant.
Instead, she could barely hear anything over her heartbeat.
When she returned, Denise was gone.
Julian had disappeared too.
Only Walter remained.
He was staring at the old deposit receipt.
After the last graduate crossed the stage, Kayla leaned toward him.
"Grandpa, why did Aunt Denise react like that?"
Walter didn't answer immediately.
He waited until the families began standing and moving toward the exits.
Then he unfolded the receipt completely.
At the bottom was a date.
Four days before the money had supposedly disappeared.
And beneath the date was a stamp confirming the deposit had already been received by the bank.
Walter's voice broke.
"If this is the original bank record, then there never was any missing cash."
Kayla stared at him.
"Then why did you sign the statement?"
May you like
His eyes filled again.
"Because Denise told me something would happen to you if I didn't."
