Chapter 13 - The Voice Behind the CameraThe forensic video report arrived on Monday.

Angela had warned Kayla not to expect miracles.
A digital file could establish what appeared in a recording, but it couldn't automatically prove every person's intention.
Still, the results were significant.
The specialist found that Julian's original file contained a continuous recording of the service corridor.
Unlike the social media version, it began forty-three seconds earlier.
And those forty-three seconds mattered.
Kayla watched the verified copy in Angela's office.
The video opened with the camera pointed toward the floor.
Julian's shoes were visible.
A brown envelope entered the frame.
Then a woman's voice spoke.
"Put it in the locker and step back."
Kayla's fingers tightened.
Denise.
She would recognize her aunt's voice anywhere.
The camera shifted.
Julian placed the envelope inside Walter's open locker.
He backed away.
Then Denise appeared briefly at the edge of the frame, wearing her school identification badge.
"Now close it," she said.
Julian obeyed.
Several seconds later, Walter approached the locker.
The recording continued as he opened it and discovered the envelope.
"What's this?" Walter asked in the video.
His confusion was unmistakable.
Then Denise stepped forward.
"Don't touch anything else, Dad."
Walter turned.
"How did this get here?"
The recording stopped shortly afterward.
Kayla stared at the screen.
No one spoke.
Finally, Angela paused the video.
"That supports your grandfather's account of the planted envelope."
Walter was sitting beside Kayla.
His face had become still.
Too still.
"Play it again," he whispered.
Angela did.
Walter watched his daughter direct his grandson to plant an envelope in his locker.
He watched himself walk into a trap.
And for the first time, he saw what had happened before he arrived.
When the video ended, Walter put his face in his hands.
Kayla reached toward him.
He shook his head gently.
"Just give me a minute."
Angela waited.
Then she explained what came next.
Julian's original file, the preservation report, and his voluntary statement could be provided to the proper investigators.
The footage also raised serious questions about the administrative allegations.
"But remember," Angela said, "the recording does not, by itself, identify who took the scholarship money."
Kayla nodded.
"That's separate."
"Exactly."
Walter slowly lowered his hands.
"Could this get my daughter arrested?"
Angela answered carefully.
"Depending on the evidence and applicable law, filing false statements or participating in financial misconduct can have consequences. I can't predict charging decisions."
He looked down.
Kayla understood his fear.
Denise was his daughter.
He had raised her.
Paid for her books.
Stayed awake when she was sick.
Helped her move into her first apartment.
And now she had helped manufacture evidence against him.
"Grandpa," Kayla whispered, "you didn't make her do this."
He looked at her.
"No."
His voice shook.
"But I keep wondering what I missed."
Angela leaned forward.
"People can make harmful choices even when someone has loved them well."
Walter wiped his eyes.
Then he straightened.
"Tell me what I need to do."
The next step was a formal meeting with the district's outside investigator, who had been retained after Angela challenged the conflicting security records.
Walter agreed to participate.
Kayla also provided her account of graduation.
Julian, through separate legal counsel, agreed to preserve his phone and provide a voluntary statement concerning the video.
Denise's attorney was notified of the allegations.
No one promised a fast result.
No one promised criminal charges.
But the situation had changed.
The accusation was no longer supported by a single edited social media video.
There was now an unedited recording showing how the supposed evidence had been planted.
That afternoon, Kayla received an email from the foundation.
The independent directors had formally restricted Denise's access to financial records while the review continued.
Henry's authority to approve transactions had also been temporarily limited.
Kayla read the email aloud.
Walter listened silently.
For a moment, she expected him to smile.
Instead, he asked, "Did Julian know she was going to accuse me of stealing?"
Kayla thought about the recording.
"I don't know how much he understood."
Walter nodded.
"Then we ask him directly."
That evening, Julian met with Angela and gave a recorded statement with his attorney present.
He admitted placing the envelope.
He admitted editing the video.
He admitted posting the false accusation without verifying it.
Then Angela asked why he had agreed to participate.
Julian's answer came slowly.
"Because Mom said Grandpa was trying to ruin Dad."
Angela leaned forward.
"Did she explain how?"
Julian stared at his hands.
"She said Grandpa found something in the maintenance records that could make Dad lose his companies."
Kayla felt a chill.
The planted envelope wasn't an impulsive prank.
May you like
It had been part of a deliberate effort to discredit Walter before his concerns could be investigated.
And Julian had just identified the fear behind it.
