Chapter 9 - What the Camera Couldn't ForgetJulian arrived at Kayla's house just before sunset.

She saw him through the living room window.
He was wearing the same light blue button-down shirt he'd worn at graduation.
For a moment, she wondered whether he had chosen it deliberately.
Walter was in the kitchen.
Kayla opened the front door but left the screen door locked.
"What are you doing here?"
Julian glanced over his shoulder.
"Can we talk?"
"We already talked."
"Not on the phone."
She studied him.
His usual confidence was gone.
There were dark circles beneath his eyes.
"Does Aunt Denise know you're here?"
"No."
"Does your father?"
Julian's jaw tightened.
"Just let me explain."
Kayla unlocked the screen but didn't invite him inside.
"You have five minutes."
Julian stepped onto the porch.
"I didn't make up the whole thing."
Kayla crossed her arms.
"What does that mean?"
"My mom told me Grandpa had taken an envelope he wasn't supposed to have."
"Then why were you putting an envelope in his locker?"
Julian looked away.
"Because she said it needed to be found there."
Kayla felt the porch tilt beneath her feet.
"You knew."
"I knew she wanted the envelope in the locker."
"And you filmed it."
"Yes."
The admission hung between them.
From the kitchen, Walter's chair scraped against the floor.
He had heard.
Julian looked toward the sound.
"Grandpa, I didn't mean for it to get like this."
Walter appeared in the doorway.
He didn't approach his grandson.
"Then what did you mean, Julian?"
Julian's eyes reddened.
"Mom said you were refusing to cooperate."
Walter stared at him.
"With what?"
"I don't know. Some foundation investigation."
"And you thought humiliating me online would help?"
Julian swallowed.
"I thought you were hiding something."
Walter nodded slowly.
"I was."
Kayla turned toward him.
Walter's voice remained steady.
"I was hiding how frightened I was of losing my granddaughter's scholarship."
Julian looked down.
Kayla didn't soften.
"Who gave you the security video from last month?"
Julian hesitated.
"Mom had it on her office computer."
"Did she send it to you?"
"She showed it to me. I recorded part of it."
"Did she tell you to post it?"
"No."
For the first time, he seemed determined to separate his choices from hers.
"I posted it because I was angry."
"Why?"
Julian's face hardened.
"Because my dad said Grandpa was trying to ruin everything our family built."
Walter gave a small, wounded laugh.
"Our family?"
Julian looked ashamed.
"You know what I mean."
"No," Walter said. "I don't."
The silence stretched.
Then Julian reached into his pocket.
He held out a flash drive.
Kayla didn't take it.
"What's that?"
"The original video from my phone. Before I cut it."
Kayla stared.
"Why bring it now?"
"Because I watched the graduation speech again."
His voice cracked.
"And you were right about the reflection."
"Of course I was right."
"No. You don't understand."
He rubbed his hands together.
"I didn't notice something in the background when I filmed."
Walter took one cautious step forward.
"What?"
Julian looked directly at him.
"Mom."
Kayla felt her pulse jump.
"What about her?"
"She comes into the corridor right before you open the locker. She tells me to move."
Kayla frowned.
"Why would she tell you to move?"
"Because she knew exactly where the camera was."
Julian extended the flash drive again.
"This is the original recording. You can hear her voice."
Kayla accepted it carefully.
She didn't open it.
"Have you given this to your lawyer?"
"No."
"Did you tell your parents?"
Julian shook his head.
"Then why should I believe you're not setting us up again?"
He looked at Walter.
"Because Grandpa used to tell me that being ashamed of something means nothing if you keep doing it."
Walter's eyes filled with tears.
But he didn't embrace him.
He simply said, "Then tell the whole truth."
Julian nodded.
"I will."
Before leaving, he turned back.
"There's something else."
Kayla waited.
"Yesterday I heard my parents arguing."
"About what?"
Julian's throat moved.
"Mom said she was done taking responsibility for the money."
Walter went still.
"And what did your father say?"
Julian looked toward the driveway.
"He told her she didn't have a choice."
Kayla gripped the flash drive.
May you like
For the first time, Julian looked genuinely frightened.
"He said if she told anyone where the money went, she'd lose everything."
