Chapter 11 - The Grandmother's ProposalEleanor chose a private meeting room at a downtown hotel.

Daniel refused to meet her alone.

Nina sat beside him when Eleanor arrived.

His mother stopped in the doorway.

"I requested a conversation with my son."

Daniel remained seated.

"My lawyer stays."

Eleanor looked at Nina with open displeasure.

"Very well."

She removed her coat and settled into the chair opposite them.

For a moment, she studied Daniel.

"You look terrible."

"My daughter has been mistreated."

Eleanor sighed.

"Vanessa clearly handled things badly."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Badly?"

"I won't defend her methods."

"You signed the security authorization."

Eleanor paused.

"I approved a request from my household manager."

"He's my household manager."

"Whom I helped you hire."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did you know Lily was sleeping in a storage room?"

Eleanor looked down at her handbag.

"I was told she needed structure."

"Did you know she was being denied food?"

"Daniel, children exaggerate."

He felt his temper rise.

Nina placed a hand on the table.

"Mrs. Mercer, we are here because you requested this meeting. What do you want to discuss?"

Eleanor straightened.

"The trust."

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

"Of course."

His mother ignored him.

"Mercer Packaging is facing a critical period. We have an acquisition opportunity that could secure the family's wealth for decades."

Daniel stared at her.

"You know I oppose selling the company under the current terms."

"Because you're sentimental."

"Because the proposed transaction undervalues several operating assets and creates serious risks for the employees."

Eleanor waved a hand.

"Business always involves difficult choices."

Nina said nothing.

Eleanor opened a leather folder.

She placed two documents on the table.

The first was a proposed settlement of the trustee dispute.

The second was a voluntary resignation.

Daniel read the heading.

"You want me to resign."

"Temporarily."

"As Lily's trustee."

"Yes."

"And you become her successor trustee."

"Only until the family situation stabilizes."

Daniel looked up.

"You filed a petition accusing me of neglecting my daughter."

"Because Lily's welfare has become a serious concern."

"Your people were responsible for her daily care."

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"Your wife was responsible. And you chose to leave."

The words struck their target.

Daniel had left.

He had traveled repeatedly.

He had believed a beautiful house and a confident adult were enough.

Eleanor watched him absorb the accusation.

Then she lowered her voice.

"Daniel, you don't have to fight this. Sign the resignation. I'll withdraw the petition. Vanessa can receive counseling. Lily can have whatever professional support she needs."

Daniel stared at her.

"And the company?"

Eleanor glanced away.

"I'll handle the trust's voting interests."

There it was.

The real proposal.

Lily's trust owned a substantial portion of Mercer Packaging.

As trustee, Daniel exercised those shareholder rights for his daughter's benefit.

Eleanor wanted the authority to exercise them instead.

Daniel closed the folder.

"No."

Eleanor looked startled.

"You haven't considered the consequences."

"I have."

"If this petition continues, every poor decision you've made as a father will be examined."

"Then let it be examined."

Eleanor's mouth tightened.

"You would expose your family to humiliation?"

Daniel leaned forward.

"My daughter has already been humiliated enough."

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Eleanor spoke quietly.

"Claire would never have allowed this."

Daniel froze.

His late wife's name hung between them.

Eleanor continued.

"Claire understood that family wealth requires discipline."

Daniel slowly stood.

"Don't use Claire to justify what happened to Lily."

Eleanor's eyes flashed.

"Sit down."

He remained standing.

"For years, I believed you were protecting this family."

"I am."

"No. You're protecting something you want."

Nina gathered the documents.

"We'll review these and respond through counsel."

Eleanor's expression changed.

The commanding certainty slipped.

For one brief second, Daniel saw fear.

Then she looked at him coldly.

"You are making an expensive mistake."

Daniel picked up his coat.

"If protecting Lily costs me money, I'll pay it."

He turned toward the door.

Eleanor spoke one last time.

"Daniel."

He stopped.

"You have no idea how close the acquisition is."

He looked back.

She leaned toward him.

"The agreement is already prepared. All that's missing is the voting authority you refuse to give me."

Daniel left without answering.

In the elevator, Nina opened the second document.

She scanned a paragraph near the end.

"Daniel."

He looked at her.

"What?"

"Your mother included a reference to an existing acquisition agreement."

"She said it was prepared."

Nina pointed at the language.

"This suggests a preliminary agreement may already have been signed."

Daniel frowned.

"She couldn't approve the sale without the required shareholder vote."

"No. But she might have promised something contingent on obtaining it."

May you like

Daniel stared at the document.

For the first time, he wondered whether his mother's determination had less to do with the company's future than with something she personally stood to gain.
