Chapter 8 - What the Security Camera RememberedThe footage arrived through a secure download link.

Daniel wanted to open it immediately.

Nina stopped him.

"Before we watch, let's document what we received."

He stared at her.

"My daughter is in those recordings."

"I know."

"She's been waiting for someone to believe her."

"And these recordings may be important to the investigators. We need to preserve them properly."

Daniel nodded reluctantly.

They saved the original files without editing them.

They recorded the download information and prepared copies for the authorities handling Lily's case.

Then Nina opened the first video.

The dining room appeared on Daniel's laptop.

Same polished table.

Same crystal chandelier.

Same ornate carpet.

The camera's wide-angle view captured the doorway and a portion of the floor beneath the table.

The recording was dated twenty-two days earlier.

Vanessa entered carrying a plate.

Lily followed.

Her hair was neatly brushed.

She wore a blue dress.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

He had bought it for her seventh birthday.

Vanessa pointed toward the dining table.

Lily hesitated.

Then she crouched.

Vanessa placed the white ceramic plate on the floor.

Daniel's hand closed into a fist.

Nina glanced at him.

"Do you want to stop?"

"No."

They watched.

Vanessa returned to the table.

Chloe sat quietly opposite her.

For several minutes, Lily ate beneath them.

Then she crawled out and reached for the water pitcher.

Vanessa turned sharply.

The camera had no usable audio, but the movement was unmistakable.

Vanessa seized Lily by the wrist and pulled her back toward the floor.

Lily stumbled.

Her knee struck the edge of a chair.

Daniel stood so abruptly that his chair scraped the carpet.

"She did that."

Nina paused the video.

Daniel paced toward the window.

He could barely breathe.

He wanted Vanessa to see what he had seen.

He wanted her to explain how she could hurt a child who had trusted her.

But another realization was taking shape.

The recording had captured Graham standing in the doorway.

He had watched.

He had seen Lily fall.

And he had done nothing.

Daniel returned to the table.

"Play the rest."

A few minutes later, Graham entered.

He spoke to Vanessa.

Then he bent down, picked up Lily's plate, and carried it away.

Lily remained beneath the table.

Daniel looked at the timestamp.

Her plate had been removed less than fifteen minutes after dinner began.

Another recording showed Lily being sent to the laundry-room hallway.

The next evening, she was placed beneath the table again.

A third video showed Chloe slipping bread from her plate and dropping it near Lily.

Vanessa noticed.

She grabbed the bread and threw it away.

Chloe began crying.

Lily reached for her stepsister's hand beneath the tablecloth.

Daniel watched that moment twice.

He had been thinking of Chloe as a witness.

Now he understood that she had also been a frightened child trying to survive the same household.

The next recording was dated eleven days earlier.

Vanessa sat alone in the dining room with her phone.

She arranged the white plate beneath the table.

Then she called Lily into the room.

The little girl was already crying.

Vanessa pointed toward the floor.

Lily obeyed.

Vanessa stepped backward and took several photographs.

Not one.

Not two.

Six.

Daniel stared.

"She arranged it."

Nina nodded.

"The sequence appears deliberate."

"Why would she photograph Lily like that?"

Nina didn't answer.

They continued watching.

Vanessa leaned down and straightened Lily's dress.

Then she moved the plate farther into the light.

She took another photograph.

Daniel suddenly remembered his mother's message.

Serious concerns about your ability to manage Lily's welfare and her trust.

The photographs weren't merely private reminders.

Someone appeared to be creating a record.

A record that made Lily look neglected.

A record that could be used against Daniel.

He looked at Nina.

"They wanted evidence that I wasn't taking care of her."

"That is one possibility."

"Who would do this?"

Nina clicked through the access report.

"Graham changed the viewing permissions. Eleanor's account approved them. Vanessa staged the photographs."

Daniel stared at the three names.

His wife.

His house manager.

His mother.

Then Nina opened the final recording in the folder.

It was from the afternoon before Daniel returned.

Graham stood beside Vanessa in the empty dining room.

Vanessa held a folder.

Graham opened it.

For a moment, he turned one document toward the camera.

The words were too small to read clearly.

But the bold heading was visible.

PETITION FOR REMOVAL OF TRUSTEE.

Daniel leaned forward.

A cold realization settled over him.

They weren't simply hiding what had happened to Lily.

They were preparing to use it.

That evening, Nina received an email from Eleanor's attorney.

May you like

Eleanor had formally petitioned the probate court to remove Daniel as trustee of Lily's inheritance.

And attached to the petition were photographs of a crying little girl eating rice beneath a dining table.
