Chapter 15 - The Choice Chloe Was Allowed to MakeChloe had stopped wearing her pink sweater.

It hung on the back of a chair in the guest room where she was staying with a relative.
She had loved that sweater.
It had been soft.
Warm.
Comfortable.
But she remembered sitting at the dining table while Lily cried beneath it.
Now the fabric made her stomach hurt.
For several days, Chloe had spoken very little.
She asked about Lily.
She asked whether Daniel was angry.
She asked whether her mother would come to get her.
The adults supporting her answered carefully.
They didn't promise what they couldn't control.
They reassured her that she wasn't responsible for resolving the investigation.
And they reminded her that telling the truth was not the same as betraying her family.
When a trained interviewer asked whether she was willing to describe what she remembered, Chloe agreed.
She spoke about dinners.
About food restrictions.
About the storage room.
About the photographs.
She explained that she had hidden her tablet because she feared losing the evidence.
At one point, her voice began trembling.
"Mom told me Lily was making everyone miserable."
The interviewer gave her time.
Chloe wiped her cheeks.
"But Lily didn't do anything."
"What made you think that?"
"She just wanted to eat with us."
Chloe looked down at her hands.
"Sometimes I gave her bread."
She hesitated.
"One time Mom caught me."
The interviewer listened without interrupting.
"After that, I was afraid."
Chloe began crying.
"I should have helped her more."
The interviewer did not ask her to judge herself.
Instead, she acknowledged how difficult the situation had been for a child.
Chloe explained that she had saved the photographs because she wanted someone to believe Lily.
When the interview ended, she was exhausted.
But something inside her felt lighter.
She had finally described what she saw without Vanessa standing nearby.
Meanwhile, Lily had been asking about her stepsister.
"Can Chloe see my new room?"
Daniel looked up from the kitchen counter.
They had moved into a temporary furnished apartment while he searched for a more permanent home.
Lily's room had yellow curtains and a small wooden desk.
She had chosen both.
Daniel considered her question.
"Maybe. We need to make sure it's okay for both of you."
Lily nodded.
"Does Chloe think I'm mad at her?"
"I don't know."
Lily twisted the ear of Mr. Buttons.
"I'm not."
Daniel sat beside her.
"You can care about Chloe and still feel hurt about what happened."
Lily considered that.
"She tried to give me bread."
"I know."
"Mrs. Vanessa threw it away."
Daniel nodded.
Lily looked toward the window.
"I want Chloe to know she wasn't bad either."
Daniel felt his eyes burn.
He arranged, through the adults assisting both girls, for Lily to send Chloe a letter.
Lily insisted on writing it herself.
Her handwriting was uneven.
Some letters leaned sideways.
She drew stars around the words.
Dear Chloe,
I am okay now. I have yellow curtains. You can see them someday if you want. Thank you for trying to help me. I still like you.
Love, Lily.
Daniel didn't change a word.
A few days later, Chloe sent a reply.
Dear Lily,
I was scared. I'm sorry I couldn't stop it. I miss you. I like yellow curtains.
Love, Chloe.
Lily read the letter three times.
Then she placed it beside Mr. Buttons.
For the first time, she asked whether Chloe could come over without immediately sounding afraid.
Daniel knew their relationship would need time.
Neither child should be forced into a reunion simply because adults wanted a happy ending.
But both girls had been given something Vanessa rarely allowed.
A choice.
That evening, Nina called.
The evidence review was nearing completion.
She had also obtained confirmation of the acquisition agreement's advisory-payment provisions.
Eleanor's private consulting company would receive the substantial fee if the deal closed.
Daniel already knew that much.
But there was another detail.
An internal timetable connected Eleanor's planned trustee appointment to a shareholder approval deadline.
The dates were close.
Very close.
If Daniel resigned or was removed quickly, Eleanor intended to exercise Lily's voting interests almost immediately.
Nina explained that any successor trustee would still owe strict duties to Lily.
The transaction could be challenged if it involved conflicts of interest.
But that had not stopped Eleanor from preparing for it.
Daniel stared at the timeline.
"She expected this to be over before I understood what happened."
"Yes."
He looked at Lily's letter on the desk.
His daughter had been treated like a problem to manage.
A piece of leverage.
An obstacle between Eleanor and a financial transaction.
Daniel slowly closed the file.
Then Nina said, "There's something else."
She had located a message Vanessa sent Eleanor shortly before the first staged photograph.
Vanessa had written:
I won't keep doing this unless you honor what you promised Chloe and me.
May you like
Eleanor's reply contained a single sentence.
Once Daniel signs, both of you will have the security you deserve.
