Chapter 12 - Coming Home

Vanessa returned on a Saturday morning.

No dramatic reunion.

No flowers.

No family announcement.

She carried the floral suitcase through the same doorway where Ethan’s blue suitcase had sat.

This time, she stopped before entering fully.

Ethan stood in the hallway.

Robert stayed back.

Vanessa crouched so she was closer to Ethan’s height.

“I’m home if that’s okay.”

Ethan looked at Robert.

Robert nodded once.

Ethan looked back at Vanessa.

“Okay.”

She did not hug him.

That had been discussed in therapy.

Let Ethan initiate physical affection.

Vanessa stood.

Then Ethan pointed toward her suitcase.

“You can put that upstairs.”

She smiled.

“I was planning to.”

“And not mine.”

“Never yours without talking to you.”

“Okay.”

He ran toward the living room.

Reintegration began with cereal bowls and laundry.

Not forgiveness speeches.

Vanessa made pancakes the next morning.

Ethan complained one was too dark.

She almost said, Then make your own.

Robert saw the irritation cross her face.

She breathed.

Made another.

Later, Ethan left Lego pieces in the hallway.

Vanessa stepped on one.

She shouted his name.

Ethan froze.

Vanessa froze too.

Old fear filled the space instantly.

Robert watched both of them.

Vanessa crouched.

“That hurt.”

Ethan whispered, “Sorry.”

“Thank you.”

She picked up the Lego.

“I’m angry about the Lego. I’m not sending you anywhere.”

Ethan stared at her.

Then nodded.

It was awkward.

Explicit.

Necessary.

That evening he left another Lego in the hallway.

Vanessa suspected it was a test.

Dr. Greene said children sometimes tested the stability adults promised.

Vanessa picked it up.

No explosion.

No suitcase.

Two weeks passed.

Then Linda came for dinner.

The tension began before appetizers.

She arrived with a toy truck for Ethan and a pink blanket for the unborn baby.

Vanessa thanked her.

Linda complimented the nursery.

Vanessa said, “Robert did most of it.”

Robert knew that was not true.

Vanessa had spent hours choosing shelves and curtains.

She was trying not to appear as though she had claimed the room.

Another form of fear.

Dinner remained polite until Ethan asked:

“Grandma, can I sleep over Friday?”

Linda brightened.

“Of course.”

Vanessa’s fork paused.

Robert noticed.

Linda noticed Vanessa noticing.

The temperature changed.

Linda said, “Unless that’s a problem.”

There it was.

Challenge disguised as courtesy.

Vanessa took a breath.

“Not for me.”

Linda looked surprised.

Ethan said, “Can I stay two nights?”

Vanessa looked toward Robert.

Robert answered:

“One night this time.”

“Why?”

“Soccer Sunday.”

“Oh.”

Simple.

No territory dispute.

Linda seemed almost disappointed.

After dinner, she asked Vanessa to speak privately.

Robert stayed out of it.

Ten minutes later, Vanessa returned to the kitchen crying.

“What happened?”

“She apologized.”

Robert looked toward the living room.

“Badly?”

Vanessa laughed through tears.

“Terribly.”

“What did she say?”

“That she had been waiting for me to fail because then missing Melissa would make more sense.”

Robert closed his eyes.

“She said that?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I told her I did fail.”

“You made a bad decision.”

“I failed Ethan.”

Robert did not argue.

Vanessa continued.

“But I told her I’m not going to keep failing him just so she can feel right.”

He stared.

“How did she take that?”

“She cried.”

“Sounds healthy.”

Vanessa laughed.

Then she looked serious.

“She also told me Melissa wrote something about me.”

“Not you.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes.”

“I want to read it someday.”

“Okay.”

“Not now.”

Robert nodded.

Her restraint surprised him again.

That night, after everyone slept, Robert passed Ethan’s room.

The door was open.

Vanessa sat beside the bed.

Ethan was asleep.

She was replacing the stuffed dinosaur beneath his arm after it had fallen.

She noticed Robert.

They looked at each other.

No words.

She stood and left the room.

In the hallway, Robert whispered:

“Thank you.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s normal.”

“Yes.”

She looked toward Ethan’s door.

“I’m trying to learn what normal looks like.”

Robert kissed her forehead.

It was the first intimate gesture since she returned.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Then her expression changed.

A hand pressed to her belly.

“What?”

She grabbed the wall.

“Vanessa?”

Pain crossed her face.

A second later, liquid hit the floor.

Robert stared.

Vanessa looked down.

Then up.

May you like

“My water just broke.”

She was only thirty-two weeks pregnant.
