Chapter 2 - What Ethan Heard

Robert stood outside Ethan’s bedroom for almost a minute before knocking.

“Buddy?”

No answer.

He opened the door slowly.

Ethan sat cross-legged on the rug beside his unpacked suitcase.

The stuffed dinosaur rested in his lap.

His room looked exactly as it had that morning.

Blue comforter.

Books stacked crookedly beside the bed.

Glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling.

A model fire truck Robert had built with him the previous Christmas.

Nothing about the room suggested someone planning to leave.

That made the packed suitcase look even more disturbing.

Robert sat on the floor.

“You okay?”

Ethan shrugged.

“Can I ask you something?”

Another shrug.

Robert held up the photocopied drawing.

“Do you remember this?”

Ethan’s eyes changed.

He nodded.

“Why did you draw yourself outside?”

Ethan rubbed the dinosaur’s tail between his fingers.

“Because babies need rooms.”

“Sometimes.”

“And Vanessa said the baby needs mine.”

Robert glanced toward the door.

She was downstairs.

“She told you that?”

“Not exactly.”

“Tell me exactly.”

Ethan frowned in concentration.

Children did not produce evidence in clean timelines.

Robert forced himself not to lead him.

“She was talking to Aunt Rachel.”

Vanessa’s older sister.

“When?”

“When they were doing the baby boxes.”

“The shower decorations?”

Ethan nodded.

“I was in the hallway. Vanessa said, ‘Once Ethan’s out, we can finally do the nursery right.’”

Robert’s stomach tightened.

“What happened after that?”

“Aunt Rachel said, ‘You better make sure Robert’s really okay with that.’”

“And Vanessa?”

Ethan looked down.

“She said you always feel bad first, but then you say yes.”

Robert felt the words like a blow.

Because they were not entirely false.

Vanessa had learned something about him.

He avoided conflict until decisions became inevitable.

When she wanted to repaint the kitchen, he said no, then eventually agreed.

When she wanted his mother to stop visiting without calling, he resisted, then accepted.

When she wanted Ethan moved from their bed after nightmares following his biological mother’s death, Robert had delayed until Vanessa forced the conversation.

Vanessa had mistaken his pattern for permission to decide first.

Maybe because he had allowed it.

“Did anyone tell you that you had to leave?”

“Vanessa said Grandma has a bigger yard.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“She said I could have a new room there.”

“When?”

“Last week.”

Robert closed his eyes briefly.

“Did she say how long?”

“No.”

“What did you think?”

Ethan whispered, “Forever.”

Robert’s chest hurt.

He moved closer.

“No one is sending you away.”

“What about the baby?”

“The baby will live here too.”

“Where?”

“We’ll figure it out.”

“My room?”

“No.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Promise?”

Robert almost answered immediately.

Then stopped.

For years he had used promises to calm Ethan.

Your mom will be okay.

We’ll always be together.

Nothing bad is going to happen.

Some promises had been impossible to keep.

This one was not.

“Yes,” he said. “I promise your room stays yours unless you and I decide together someday that you want something different.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

Then asked, “Why did you pack Vanessa’s suitcase?”

Robert hesitated.

Because adults sometimes need space sounded hollow.

Because she scared you sounded unfair.

Because I’m furious did not belong on Ethan’s shoulders.

“Because Vanessa and I need to talk somewhere you don’t have to hear us.”

“Is she going away forever?”

Robert looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Ethan hugged the dinosaur tighter.

That was the truth.

Downstairs, Vanessa sat at the kitchen table.

Her suitcase remained by the door.

Robert entered carrying Ethan’s drawing.

“Three weeks.”

Vanessa looked up.

“You had this for three weeks.”

“I was trying to figure out where it came from.”

“He heard you.”

Her face fell.

“What?”

“You and Rachel. The baby shower boxes.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Oh God.”

“So it did come from you.”

“I said once Ethan’s stuff was out.”

“That is not what he heard.”

“It was about reorganizing!”

“Then why were you sending him to my mother’s?”

Vanessa stood.

“Because I panicked.”

“About what?”

“Everything!”

The force of the word surprised him.

She pressed both palms against the table.

“I am thirty-five, six months pregnant, my blood pressure has been up twice, you work sixty hours a week, Ethan still wakes up screaming for his mother sometimes, he hates every baby thing I bring into this house, and everyone keeps telling me how lucky I am.”

Robert stared.

“Ethan doesn’t hate the baby.”

“He tore up the ultrasound picture.”

“What?”

Vanessa walked to a kitchen drawer.

She removed two pieces of glossy paper taped back together.

A black-and-white ultrasound image.

A tear ran straight through the center.

“I found it under his bed.”

Robert studied it.

“Did you ask him?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That he didn’t know.”

“And you believed he was lying.”

“He was.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I live here, Robert.”

“So do I.”

“Barely.”

That landed.

Robert looked away.

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“I know what I did today was wrong.”

He looked back.

“But?”

“But I need you to understand I didn’t wake up and decide I hated your son.”

“I never said you did.”

“You looked at me like I did.”

Robert rubbed his forehead.

“What were you planning?”

“A month with Linda.”

“A month?”

“Maybe six weeks.”

“Without asking me?”

“I was going to talk to you tonight.”

“After his suitcase was packed?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“He was supposed to go after dinner.”

“That isn’t asking me.”

“No.”

Silence.

Finally Robert said, “Go to Rachel’s.”

Vanessa’s expression tightened.

“You still want me to leave?”

“Yes.”

She looked toward the ceiling.

Toward Ethan’s room.

“Can I say goodbye?”

“Not tonight.”

Pain flashed across her face.

Robert almost changed his mind.

That was his pattern.

Feeling discomfort.

Then surrendering the boundary.

He stayed quiet.

Vanessa picked up her purse.

At the door she paused.

“I didn’t tear that ultrasound picture.”

Robert frowned.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t understand.”

She looked frightened now.

“It was already torn when I found it.”

“So?”

“I only said Ethan did it because I couldn’t think of anyone else who could have.”

Robert stared.

May you like

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Rachel was the only other person in this house that afternoon.”
