Chapter 17 - Melissa’s Sister

Her name was Claire Bennett.

Melissa’s younger sister.

Ethan’s aunt.

She lived two states away in Maryland and visited only a few times each year.

After Melissa died, Claire withdrew from Robert.

Not angrily.

Quietly.

She said being in the house was too painful.

She remained close to Linda.

Sent Ethan birthday gifts.

Called at Christmas.

When Robert married Vanessa, Claire did not attend.

She claimed a work emergency.

Robert had never challenged it.

Claire had the photograph because she took it.

When Robert called, she denied sending the email.

Then he mentioned the attached picture.

Silence.

“Claire.”

She began crying.

“I didn’t think she’d show anyone.”

Robert closed his eyes.

“You sent it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I was angry.”

“At Vanessa?”

“At you.”

That surprised him.

“What did I do?”

“You replaced Melissa.”

Robert almost laughed from exhaustion.

“She died.”

“I know.”

“I waited two years before I even dated.”

“I know.”

“Then what?”

Claire’s voice broke.

“You stopped talking about her.”

“That is not true.”

“With me.”

Robert went silent.

Claire continued.

“After the funeral, we talked every week. Then Vanessa came. Then calls became monthly. Then birthdays.”

“That wasn’t because of Vanessa.”

“It felt like it.”

Again.

Feeling becoming evidence.

“What did you want the email to do?”

“Make her slow down.”

“With adopting Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“How did you know?”

“Linda.”

Robert closed his eyes.

Of course.

Not maliciously perhaps.

Linda mentioned Vanessa exploring adoption.

Claire panicked.

Sent the email.

Vanessa interpreted it as Linda’s rejection.

Abandoned adoption plans.

Asked Linda to take Ethan after the baby.

Linda interpreted that as proof Vanessa wanted Ethan gone.

Every person created the thing they feared.

“Did you tear the ultrasound picture?”

Claire was silent.

Robert stood.

“Claire.”

“Yes.”

His stomach turned.

“When?”

“I came by that afternoon.”

“You weren’t here.”

“You were at work. Vanessa was upstairs. Rachel was in the backyard taking a call.”

“How did you get in?”

“Linda still had the garage code.”

“You used my mother’s code?”

“She gave it to me years ago.”

“What were you doing?”

“I wanted one of Melissa’s paintings.”

Robert could barely believe it.

“You entered my house without permission.”

“Yes.”

“And tore Vanessa’s ultrasound?”

“I saw it on the counter.”

“Why?”

“I was angry.”

“At a photograph?”

“At everything!”

Claire sobbed.

“That baby was proof Melissa was gone.”

Robert gripped the table.

“You let Ethan get blamed.”

“I didn’t know he would.”

“You heard about it.”

Silence.

“Linda told you.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I was ashamed.”

Robert closed his eyes.

The anonymous email.

The ultrasound photograph.

Neither justified Vanessa packing Ethan’s suitcase.

But they explained the escalating sense that she was under attack.

“Did you make the CPS report?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell anyone online?”

“No.”

Robert believed her.

The CPS report likely came from someone downstream of the gossip.

Unknowable.

Maybe irrelevant now.

Claire whispered:

“Do you hate me?”

Robert thought of Ethan upstairs.

Vanessa in the nursery.

Sophie sleeping.

Melissa’s letter.

“No.”

Claire cried harder.

“But you’re not coming into my house again until we deal with this properly.”

“I understand.”

“No, Claire.”

His voice sharpened.

“You committed a serious violation. You targeted Vanessa. You let Ethan take the blame for something you did.”

“I know.”

“You need to apologize to both of them.”

“I will.”

“When they’re ready.”

“Yes.”

“And you need help.”

A pause.

“I know.”

Robert hung up.

Vanessa sat across from him.

She had heard everything.

For a long time she said nothing.

Then:

“I blamed Ethan for something a grown woman did because it fit the story I already believed.”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“I owe him another apology.”

“Yes.”

“And your mother.”

“For what?”

“I thought she sent the email.”

“You never accused her.”

“I treated her like she did.”

Robert shrugged.

“Linda gave Claire the information.”

“Still.”

They sat quietly.

Then Vanessa said:

“This doesn’t change what I did.”

“No.”

“I’m relieved.”

Robert looked at her.

“Relieved?”

“That there isn’t a secret explanation that makes me innocent.”

He understood.

Because if Claire became the villain, Vanessa could avoid looking at herself.

She refused that escape.

That night Vanessa entered Ethan’s room.

Robert stayed outside.

She told him about the ultrasound photo.

That he had been blamed unfairly.

That Claire admitted tearing it.

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“I told you!”

“I know.”

“You thought I lied.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because I was scared and I decided what was true before I knew.”

Ethan frowned.

“That’s dumb.”

“Yes.”

“Are you sorry?”

“Very.”

He considered.

Then said:

“You have to buy me ice cream.”

Vanessa blinked.

Robert covered a laugh outside the door.

“Is that how justice works?”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

“Chocolate.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Done.”

Ethan looked at her.

“And Sophie can’t have any.”

“She doesn’t have teeth.”

“Good.”

Vanessa laughed.

Then Ethan held out his arms.

She froze.

He rolled his eyes.

“It’s a hug.”

May you like

Vanessa crossed the room.

This time, he initiated it.
